i am starting uni in two weeks, after months of trying to sell him i just don't know what to do anymore. he is no spring chicken, at 19 however he is still active. i am advertising him as free to good home as that is more important than money to me. i really am in despair, is there any places that take in horses? the blue cross only take in horses that are in danger, there was a place near me that wouldn't take him in as they only took 'quiet horses' (he is strong sometimes when being hacked) does anyone have any advice, ANYTHING, to help please?

I know not everyones favourite. But try a riding school as an escort horse out hacking so only the instuctors/more experienced riders ride him out hacking. Plus, he could have a few schooling sessions but over all a quiet life. And if it's a local stables, you can keep an eye on him.

A horse from our yard who hasn't been ridden for about 4 years has just gone on loan to Bishop Burton College (?) for students to ride, care for etc. He used to be a super dressage horse but due to owner's accident (non-riding accident) he hasn't been ridden. It will be great for him to be getting some work now.

You should try ringing some of these colleges and asking about them taking your horse. I can only think of Brackenhurst and Riseholme apart from Burton but no doubt there are plenty more. Or as someone else said, try good riding schools too.

i have considerd this, but having been to a college myself i dont see him fitting in. also they only loan the horse, and i was looking for him to go to a long term home

Just had a thought - Horse Gossip (forum) has a wanted section where there's a few people looking for cheapish horses due to finances but offering a good home, and there are some wanted ads on Project Horses looking for the same thing. Have you checked those?

Have you thought about trying horsemart or one of the other bigger sites.

You'll get mnore passing traffic than that one where not many people look.

I originally come from Bedfordshire and may know somebody that can take on your horse - send me a private message with your details and I'll try and get hold of my friend meantime

when i went travelling for 18 months I put my horse on grass livery with lydia harvey in Suffolk. Horse was on 200 acres of parkland (where latitude festival was held) in a big group. It was horse heaven, they were checked everyday, had feet trimmed/wormed etc and it was only £20 a week... maybe worth emailing Lydia. I think she sells some horses too now, so I am sure you'll find her number if you google her.
