How many pads and numnahs are too small for the saddles???? Its Olympia, not the Pony Club, and ive counted umpteen numnahs or pads that are underneath the panels of the saddles, far too small.

And one rider trotted past the camera and his saddle was bouncing up and down like a see saw.

They dont tack up themselves, the grooms do it, often in a rush and most showjumpers use at least the same saddle on most their horses, with pads/numnah's add or removed to alter the fit, lay off and leave the poor grooms alone, do the horses look bothered?? no not really,

If my horse could jump a World Cup class with the saddle impinging on her shoulders Id put the saddle on her ears to see how good she jumped then :D:D:D

HHO Knows Best Sunday!

i think we should write them all a book. they would really appreciate it i think. i mean, our collective knowledge is clearly much higher than theirs, obviously.
we could suggestive new training methods, new tack, how to school, and ride their horses as whatever they are doing is not working.
we know best!

My new years resolution is to agree with everything and everybody and praise everyone for being so marvellous.

In the meantime i cant agree with pads causing a ridge of pressure underneath a saddle. Even if the horse still jumps the moon. Its just common sense isnt it?

Or maybe it isnt. Ha ha:)

The same debates happen every time Olympia comes on the tv and I think a bit of debate is good. In fact, the 'I know better than you people - lets reply really sarcastically' who respond to these people annoy me more than the original posters! Even riding at that level does not mean they are perfect - and plenty of the horses clearly did mind. Just my opinion.

Oh God, no, don't do that!! How boring! ;)
I'm just poking fun at you. You are correct, of course about the pads/numnahs, but I'm with Redcascade on this. None of my business. I'm sure they would have plenty to say about MY tack/riding....

Really? They minded the position of their pads? Did you compare the position of the pads of the horses that jumped badly to the ones that jumped well? How can you be so sure that it wasn't something else?

When we're riding at that level we can tell them but it's really none of our business what they do and don't do with their horses

I couldn't agree more!! it seems that there are more than a few 'all the gear no idea' people on this forum that should really keep their views to themselves. and i too could probably doo with keeping my mouth shut now and again, but that will only happen when hell freezes over and pigs tap
dance on the moon :D

Well, I'm going to get myself hammered into the ground by agreeing completely with the OP.

It's just this attitude of "they are professional riders so they must be right" that has allowed rollkur and other horrors to become so mainstream.

So, when it comes to certain aspects of horses' welfare, I am happy to hold my hands up and say "yes I do know more than some of these people" even if it means being shot down. :p:p

heeheeheee how dare they win millions of pounds, jump the biggest tracks in the >world <(have the best physios, the best vets mind you too),, foot perfect (to me) and have a wayward saddle pad or a bouncy saddle!!!!!!!! surely it must hinder performance>>> Ooooerrr ,no hang on,,, OH wait a miniute it apears NOT !!!!!!!!!! Horse and hound online" YOUR HIRED!!!!"

Didn't say anything about position of pads. Just they minded - in general. :P As in clearly not happy doing the round - I think the best opinions often come from non-horsey people because their views are not clouded by everything else - the commentator said one rider was 'keeping her horse sweet and happy' - to which my very non-horsey sister replied otherwise - and I think this is true.

Well said.

Hmm, well i have not watched all of the Olympia coverage as have some yet recorded stuff to watch but, what I have seen so far did not seem to demonstrate unhappy, uncomfortable horses. I do not believe they would attempt to jump those fences if they were particularly uncomfortable.

Sure we can all pick fault with anyone else's riding but I don't think those riders have got to where they are by putting their horses in pain to do the job.

Well they must being doing something right as it is a world cup qualifier! I also very much doubt that the horses welfare is being impeeded excessively by a numnah which may or may not be "too small". If a saddle is correctly fitted it does not actually need any sort of padding etc.
I did not see a single horse refuse and no demoltition jobs either, all i saw was happy healthy horses at the very top of there game with very talented riders who we can all be inspired to ride like them.

hmmmm, this thread has turned out odd.
If one of us were to post a photo where our horses saddle pad was much too short and the saddle too far forward, all hell would break loose.
I agree with OP, some cloths were too short. I assume they were mostly sponsors saddlecloths reserved for shows though, so not everyday pads, and therefore unlikey to cause long term issues.

Back to the original question - they don't, the grooms do it. Perhaps we should have a thread on paying grooms decent wages across the industry, and not requiring them to do too many horses in a given period of time without help!

ditto that^^^ and add!! which bit was 'clearly' as to me/from the results most of them came away with double clears and at most 8 faults for top top level showjumping thats not bad!!!

oh dear, i'm going to be in for it, because i've just posted about exactly the same thing in CR.
it's not "holier than though"... it takes a few seconds to make sure the saddle pad is in the correct place and not too short for the saddle, surely?
no, i'm not saying i'm better than top International SJers, either... before the brickbats start!

Erm, it creates a pressure ridge across the spine. They'd be better without the too-short saddle pads than with them, surely?
