Cant show jumpers tack up properly

I agree with OP, some cloths were too short. I assume they were mostly sponsors saddlecloths reserved for shows though, so not everyday pads, and therefore unlikey to cause long term issues.

It has happened time and time again on here, you post a picture and some eagle eye spots something they don't like and all hell breaks loose! But, because these people were at Olympia, it's ok and we shouldn't judge or comment. Talk about one rule for one.....!

It's just standards!!!
 
The naievety of some people on this thread is amazing.

Because a rider is in a world cup class that exempts them from tacking up properly. And unless you also happen to be riding in the world cup class too youre not allowed to mention it?? :rolleyes:

What about all the thousands of football fans that sit on the sofa commenting on wayne rooney, et al? I suppose they should shut their mouths too heh? Seeing as theyve never made it beyond their local park, how dare they comment on something they watch on the telly. :rolleyes:

What is this world coming to? No wonder there are so many poor horses out there when people just accept what they see or are told and dont question anything.

Theres nothing wrong with questioning and debating- its healthy

Have just read this thread and found it so interesting. People seem to beleive that if you are a GP SJ at Olympia you can do what you like. Anyone who saw Michael Whittaker win yesterday saw a brilliant piece of riding as there was from many of the other competitors.

However that doesnt mean these riders and others arent open to question or critisim and not just by those at the same level - top dressage riders who practice rollukur (sp!?) for example.

When Laura B did her recent interview with H&H following her sucess at WEG she said Alf never gets turned out all because he damages himself but is worked everyday. If someone came on here and said this there would be an outcry that a horse was denied turnout and the time to be a horse, this opinion made by people who have no knowledge of the individual horse or its circumstances. The only difference is the value of the horse itself. Alf is worth millions and the posters horse perhaps only a few hundred.

Debate and expressing opinions makes the world interesting. Hypocrisy should be left to politicians.
 
Now i'm not into Show Jumping but i like to watch it from time to time, but last night at Olympia i was disgusted to see one jumper lose his stirrup leather and at least 1 other horse lose BOTH back shoes- is this the standard these days as someone is accountable?

i don't know if i speak for myself when i say i'm not jealous of them...i just think that with the great success they all have, they should really know how to use correctly fitting tack!

Im not being funny, but if my mum who knows nothing about horses manages to point out that one of my boot straps waa un-done before i went into a ring once, then the probably hundreds of people who know about how a boot should be put on could have pointed out to the rider that the boot was coming off and done it up!!

and what relevance does my post have to the person loosing a shoe??
 
I too am not so much jealous!
We are all entitled to our own opinions and all entitled to 'critique' those who are 'above' us so to speak.

I didn't follow Olympia and personally, my aims are not to compete ( I ride horses for pleasure and actually enjoy working with youngsters/horses with bad pasts and just enjoying them), but it doesn't make my opinion- nor anyone elses for that matter- less valid.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but this thread is amusingly pathetic and full of jealousy. If any of you were to be employed by one of the showjumpers you are criticising your views would be completely turned around. I'm not for most of the tack used and nobodies riding is perfect but this is what the competition world is.
The riders are on top class horses, who are incredibly fit, full of energy and mostly bred in such a way they are intelligent and highly strung. How many here have ridden a horse like that? And tried to jump it?

Maybe give it a go and then post back about how well you contained it in just a snaffle and cavesson noseband over a 1m50 course.

Sure they could spend more months and years schooling to perfection, but reality is they are making a living out of the sport, therefore shortcuts will be taken.

They can do what they like!! As if any of them are going to care what people on bloomin HHO say/think! I personally was just enjoying the SJing and didn’t noticed that any ones saddle cloth was too short, TBH I couldn’t care less, hardly a welfare issue!

You could argue that an eventer is a Jack of all trades and master of none, though... Not good enough to ride a proper dressage test, not fast or light enough to be a chaser and not precise/scopey enough to showjump :D

Or bloody fantastic as there are very few horses talented enough to do all 3 ;) I gave up my search and decided to produce instead...

I agree they can do what they like and they will and nobody will change that. This doesnt mean we cant have a discussion about it and their actions cannot be commented upon. The main point seems to be that people shouldnt comment because of who these riders are and the level they are at.
 
I'm on both sides of the fence with this debate, being a SJ groom who incidently has done her BHS Stages, so does know better; the pressure that you are under with a string of 5 or 6 horses at a big show like Olympia can become too much and small mistakes are bound to happen for example the saddlecloth slipping etc.

However on this circuit, particularly watching the World Cup Qualifiers, with all the top ranked riders, ill fitting accessories are the least of these horses worries with what goes on behind the scenes and at Home!

Erm, its impossible to cross your hands in F1. from centre to full lock takes less than 90 degrees and the wheels can only be held at the side as not round. :p

Just didn't want anyone thinking us armchair F1 ex-spurts dont know what is what.

People can comment on whatever they want if they feel the need.. I for one just find those posters (such as the OP on this thread) a bit annoying! comment all they like for me but all it does it make people look a bit of a t*t, im my eyes. :)
 
Dowjones, thank you for your polite reply, i know bugger all about stirrup bars and their purpose as i worked for a showjumper in the late 60s and these things weren't about- and as for jealousy, i dont do that, i thought it more"off" last night when the horse lost 2 hind shoes to be honest, so what is your excuse for that? Roll on when hunting can resume and a bit of good NH racing!!!!

AM I THE ONLY PERSON WHO WATCHED THE SHOW JUMPING LAST NIGHT FROM OLYMPIA AND ACTUALLY JUST ENJOYED IT!:)

whereas some of us think that anyone whose opinion seems to be "they're riding at x level, therefore they can do absolutely no wrong - the horse's comfort doesn't matter, and anyone who criticises them is a t*t" really doesn't sound that great either...

if i posted a picture or vid of myself doing something totally wrong, or with a piece of tack incorrectly fitted, would i expect no comment at all because i've ridden at a certain level? no, because it's the horse's comfort that matters most imho.

btw, I really enjoyed the sjing, thought it was great, especially that MW won in such a way, actually going wider than the others (because of the slippery corner?) but keeping the pace up, fantastic riding.
