Cant show jumpers tack up properly

Did anyone see E Whitaker giving her mount a thump on the head as she got on?

Oh sorry, shhh, musn't criticise....

I'm on both sides of the fence with this debate, being a SJ groom who incidently has done her BHS Stages, so does know better; the pressure that you are under with a string of 5 or 6 horses at a big show like Olympia can become too much and small mistakes are bound to happen for example the saddlecloth slipping etc.

However on this circuit, particularly watching the World Cup Qualifiers, with all the top ranked riders, ill fitting accessories are the least of these horses worries with what goes on behind the scenes and at Home!

Having been up close to the showjumping world, I believe every word you have written there. We need a News of the World exposee. Really.

I tend to cringe at a lot of things she does I just avoid watching her now

*GASP*
But she's riding at top level so she can't possibly EVER do anything wrong, she's therefore utterly perfect, you are obviously just a nasty jealous person, how DARE you criticise anyone who rides at a higher level than you?
;) ;) ;)
Oh, I forgot,
Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

(This is very very sarcastic, btw, just in case someone doesn't get it.)

She's not my favourite by a long way, but the calm way she sits on Ladina while she prats about down to a big fence is very impressive.

Ooh, how did I miss this fun little argument? :D

I've not watched Olympia but in general...

Just because someone has become a successful showjumper (or successful in some other ridden disciplines) does not necessarily mean they have ever had to learn to tack up properly, or even learn to tack up at all. It also does not necessarily mean they care about whether their tack is well fitting or not.

Saying that, plenty of showjumpers can probably tack up I would think. ;)

People can comment on whatever they want if they feel the need.. I for one just find those posters (such as the OP on this thread) a bit annoying! comment all they like for me but all it does it make people look a bit of a t*t, im my eyes. :)

Im annoying because i have commented on the poor standards of horsemanship by people who should know better?? *snigger* Would i be less of a t*t if i ignored it? Or should i just accept that they are international sjers and im not, therefore they are right and i am wrong and therefore i should know my place and keep my mouth shut? I think i'd rather be a bit of a t*t actually. Or even a whole one. I dont even mind being one the size of one of Katie Prices if that means i dont have to lower my standards to accept tacking up like that.

I too enjoyed the show jumping but i dont see why that means i mustnt comment on their awful tacking up. :)

Thing is, there are 3 threads on here now about Olympia, all of which have people saying it doesnt matter what these riders do.
I started one about them taking their hats off while riding, and got made to feel about as big as an ant, there is this one and one about martingales.
If I put a picture on here of me riding with no hat on, wrongly used martingale and badly fitting saddlecloth, I would be slated.
But because it is professional riders that are doing this, it seems to be the general concensus that its all ok.

I watch Olympia because it is fun. I went to watch it because I love the atmosphere. I don't sit there and check every bit of tack blah blah blah.....

I don't care if they are top riders or not, i'm not getting into a tizzy over it.....

Just enjoy it for what it is, a collective schedule of fun and serious events to herald the arrival of Christmas for us horse lovers!

:D

Actually where the thread demanding either they sack their farrier/were clearly overdue shoeing the horse or stating their hadn't fitted their over reach boots correctly? Perhaps also a 2nd thread baying for the riders blood for not pulling up and stating that they wouldn't jump having lost a shoe.:)

Absolutely, I watch it because I enjoy it too!
But that still doesnt stop people noticing things that in the learner riders mind is wrong.

I agree there about Ladina.A very difficult ride by the look of it.

Musing in and out of HHO.

Interested that some of the other posts, asking for help, etc., get so few viewings, and this one gets three pages.

That's because if someone offers help, someone else will tell them it's wrong, a slanging match will ensue, someone will get agitated, upset someone else and then get banned.

It's far safer to slate the top riders who incidentally wouldn't give a monkeys chuff coz they have just won £20,000 in a SJ competition....

:D

They might notice things, but sometimes I allow my mind to completely relax and be entertained for once.

I believe others should try it, without being 'Holier Than Thou' most of the time.

I imagine they're barely fit to ride in the Shetland Grand National. Can you believe it, a numnah that doesn't fit the saddle? Gosh. I expect that's because any showjumper or groom has never ever ever everrrr had to tack up their own mount, even as a child. I suppose it comes as a complete surprise when they make it over the first fence, never mind round the whole course

*grumblegrumble about mutter same saddle different horses moan even if they DO perform so welll... grumblemumble.. imagine how well they'd perform with a saddle that fitted just them mutter*

:p

Actually, watching it tonight, the only one with a really noticable short numnah was Cian O'Connor, I think it's a bit of an optical illusion with the sheepskin pads to be honest....

Well, he's got a girls name anyway... what do you expect? Cheh!

i wish the majority would ride properly rather than a bag of shyte!
since when did a canter become a sitting trot? They should be ashamed - they are like novices pulling the horses mouths about! xx

I agree! And as I have a degree in Quantum Physics, (followed by a Masters, and Phd....) I feel I am properly qualified to say so....it's all bolstered by my Riding & Road Safety test I did when I was 16.....:D

This thread is mildly amusing, Am watching the grand Prix now and I haven't noticed one numnah that's too short - ooh maybe they read this thread....!!! OR maybe it's beacuise I am watching the jumping, the turns, the striding etc etc. Also, this thread seemed to start about saddlecloths being too short - well as far as I see the cloths themselves are thin cloths showing the sponsors name in most cases. Any padding are the half pads that do give the illusion of the cloth being shorter than it is.

I don't see how the cloths they have on really have any effect on the horse at allto be honest.

As for other comments re top riders dong no wrong - I don't think anyone would say they don't. Nobody's perfect after all and I am sure each and every one of us has had our 'moments' of bad decisions/actions. I still don't think you can force any horse to jump fences though through bad treatment - certainly not over a long period of time. Eventually cracks will show.

interesting you should say about the cracks showing........ a fair few buckeroos and rearers in evidence....
