I went with my friend to view a mare for sale yesterday. She's a 15.3hh bay Belgium warmblood, 9 years old. My friend was interested in buying her. We were told she was very nervous and had been labelled a head case by people on the livery yard. I agreed to tack her up, lunge her and then have a little ride round on her for my friend to see. She was nervous being tacked up. She was nervous on the lunge, very forward and was running away. As I got on her she started panicking but then settled. I walked and trotted her round and discovered she couldn't cope with any pressure from my legs so rode her from the voice and she listened. My friend then got on and started walking and the mare suddenly freaked out, spinning, rearing and bucking and my friend came off. The owner told me no one else will get on her and my friend was understandably put off. I honestly believe this mare desperately needs a one to one bond with someone, time and trust. The owner asked me to have her for £500 but I have 2 youngsters myself on diy livery and work full time and no way can I give her the time she needs. The owner then discussed the option of having her pts as in the wrong hands it would be a disaster. They know nothing of the mares past and they used her as a broodmare themselves (they are an elderly couple) and then sent her for professional schooling in the hope it would make her more sellable. I just feel so sad for the mare as she has the sweetest of natures but no trust in humans at all. She needs going right back to basics and just learning to trust someone. I just wish I could give her that :( bit of a pointless post but I can't get her sweet face out of my head!

Bless...poor lamb...I'd have her if it was the new year and she was a gelding. My YO wouldn't have a mare now...but she's obviously not a lost cause if she was responsive to you...could be a hugely rewarding opportunity!!!

Awww talk about pulling on your heart strings, really sounds like she found a glimmer of hope in the kind human who understood her yesterday, is like a black beauty story! XX

It is very sad and I hope the horse doesn't end up being pts but if the horse is likely to flip and rear etc then theres a high chance of someone getting seriously hurt- especially on a livery yard with other people! and it is not worth that.
