No heat or swelling anywhere, no skid marks in field to show signs of hooning around. Can't see anything in hoof. Was trimmed yesterday and all fine.
Looks very sorry for himself and can't walk at all. Any idea what it could be? What should I be looking for?

Get him in a stable asap. My first thought would be an abscess as this will make them not weight bear.

Speak to a vet

Unless the trim was Sweeny Todd style, then it could be an abscess.

Any pulses?

Keep in on soft bed. Get vet.

Classic abscess: stable and poultice, put a poultice round coronet and also round the sole of the hoof, I did this, gave him two Danilon for comfort.
Bandaged both front legs for support as he is now standing on three legs.
Called vet out on Monday, the foot poultice showed pus coming down through the frog [previously dry and not tender], I had also hoof tested [small hammer tapped round the sole]. Vet found it with a hoof tester in the same place, he pared round quite a few places including white line, found a bruise on sole with hoof testers, then pus, opened it up.
Bill: shared visit £24 was.. check for lameness £14 [fcs walked out of stable ten yards], treat for lameness £15... total[VAT] £65 for a thirty minute treatment, no wonder I go for belt and braces preventative medicine.
If this is your problem, buy a dozen vetwrap[Ebay] and six animalintex or NAF stuff, it can go on for ages, I had to turn my boy out prematurely as he was going a bit nutty!

He may have bee. Trimmed too short, or have abcess. Poultice and danilon.if u have any, may take at least a few days to show. Personally I don't par sole away as then have to stop infection.getting in the hole until sole grows out, this can take months!

Any heat in the foot? Any digital pulse? If not, it could be higher up. When my horse did her shoulder she was totally non weight bearing and no heat or swelling anywhere.

OK, I was very concerned about infection getting in from below, but I had to weigh up against pony going nuts. What were my options, given that the infection had already come out through the frog.
I think have may have problem ongoing from his abscess, will pm you.

Farrier been. As suspected, it's an abscess. Been drained and now poulticed. Not too deep. Phew, panic over - thanks all for your help :)

Cool.

Hopefully it's just a freak thing with the weather and spring (or was wormed/vaccinated recently).

But it's always worth reviewing the whole health and diet with an abscess.

Sometimes they can be a warning.

I had a couple of abscesses over the years - none since I dropped alfalfa/molassed feeds and tidied up my mineral input.

Have returned PM, but didnt read this bit first!!
If abcess already burst, best to go with it. keep this hole open until infection has gone. then let it heal. treat reguarly to preent infection getting into hole. eg diluted milton made up into a spray bottle every other day, or a mild anticeptice off shelf ( My friend has been using asdas own anticeptic spray with anesthitic daily on a frog puncture wound, and I have also used it on rainscald as is a milder version of hibi scrub).

Foot and frog will tae about 3 months to grow from heel to toe, but it is imprortant that frog recieves pressure/stimulation during this time otherwise it will atrophy. pads work well.

:)
