canter lead

Monty is struggling with getting the correct canter lead on the right rein (his worst rein), any idea's?
Or is it a case of try and try again?

We have only just started work on canter so he is a bit unbalanced and tends to run into it doing a great impression of a giraffe

Try asking for canter over a jump pole. Worked for my girl.

just check your saddle is sitting far enough back. The saddle can often sit too far forward which restricts movement through the shoulder and stops the correct canter lead being taken. if you sit the saddle slightly further back you may find you free the shoulder up and he takes it correctly. Check by lunging him without the saddle and see if he takes the correct lead. If he does then saddle is a distinct possibility

Agree with asking for it over a pole, quite often works with my stubborn little beasty!

Also, my instructor suggested doing the following:

Pick up canter on "good" rein. Turn diagonally across the school as if changing the rein. When just past the middle, come back to trot for a few strides, then ask for canter when turning back on to the track (on to the "bad" rein). You can try putting a pole just before the track, so you're asking over one there. Hope that makes sense!

My pony loves cantering round, so if I bring him back to trot as soon as he goes on the wrong leg, and keep doing it, and then let him go when he gets it right, he gets the idea. It drives me mad though!!

Try moving your outside leg right back as this will remind him which leg to kick off first. As he gets the hang of it you can move your leg gradually back to the right posistion.

I have had to do this with Sus and it has worked a treat on all the youngsters that i school

also ask for canter on the straight - asking on a corner can make them overbend apparently.....?

My daughter takes the pony over a small jump and starts to turn right as she's going over it, then the pony takes a right lead canter and my daughter then settles him onto a 20m circle.

We have now got to the stage where he will canter at a corner, but the turn needs to be quite sharp!
