Canter Lead

Does any one else find it hard to tell if you are on the right canter lead when schooling ?? Had a lesson on Sunday and he kept on striking off on the wrong leg on the left rein, but I was amazed as he was so balanced and natural on the wrong leg, even round the corners.

I am now worrying as to how long he has been doing it ! Shoud I be worried ?

He is a giant cob type and we generally only hack (lesson was the first in 2 years), so am assuming he is only cantering with the one lead out. Although I do ask for alternate leads.

You should really use both leads out as well as changing diaganol, even if you do hack, otherwise they will become very one sided. If you really can't tell you will have to look down to check. Someones cob I used to ride did this, so I used to trot a 10m circle and made sure he was really bent to the inside and then asked.

nah - got bored !!!!! don't also like the fact that this forum is public !!! prob makes no sense what so ever !!!!! the people I brought him from where not to happy with me !!! don't want them knowing anything, should they ever come on here, sure they dont but you never know

well balanced horses can happily canter round on both leads - my old pony certainly used to!!

as for getting the right lead i found that on a highland that i used to show riding into the corner in shoulder-in used to help as we had bend etc already established.
