Pointless moan really!! Having native types will thick "luxurious" (read mud magnet, wind knot infested bog brushes) tails I found Canter mane and tail spray one of the best ways of keeping their tails nice, silky and tangle free. I'm not keen on baby oil as I find it too greasy, same with pig oil, and I was perfectly happy until the makers of Canter decided to put it into their SILLY new "Equimist" livery.....all the new spray bottle does is deliver a huge mist of product that goes everywhere EXCEPT in the mane or the tail!! Smaller bottles, more expensive, not to mention the waste of product.

Well Carr, Day and Martin - I will no longer be buying your product and have changed over to Equine America magic sheen, which comes in a sensible trigger spray..pointless moan over.

Why don't you just decant it into a suitable trigger spray topped bottle? Bit extreme to stop using it!

I find baby oil or pig oil is ok on mane and tail and it's saving me loads of time cleaning his ridiculous feathered legs.

I hate the new bottles, I'm buying up all the old stuff and stockpiling it lol! eBay has some bargains and my fave product, dreamcoat, I managed to get four of the old style metal sprays for £9 each from a closing down tack shop! You can decant the new style by breaking the plastic outer and piercing the bag lol, but it's cheaper to buy old stock imo!

Because it is now £11 ish for 600ml, old bottle is same price for 1ltr - quite a jump, and you cannot get the silly tops off the new bottles without a fight and the liquid is in a silly bag!! Nope, voting with my feet on this one and quite happy with the Magic Sheen but I have also bought a bottle of Lincoln silky shine to try.

I like cowboy magic

just reading your thread about Canter day and martin mane and tail spray, I have to agree its just not the same, it use to be the best spray out there, I have been able to get some in the old style bottles for now as the new ones are horrible and it does not feel the same when in my cobs mane or tail, doesn't have the same effect it use to have. Can anyone suggest a better mane and tail out there now? I've done the pig oil and baby oil, but find it to oily.

I refused to buy my usual bottle of Canter when I realised they had rebranded it and that it was going to cost the same for a lot less of the product. Even I'm not that stupid.

I bought a NAF one instead which seems to be going the job just as well. To be honest, the claims that they keep tails tangle-free for 7 days is a load of rubbish, since I always ended up using it daily.

A friend uses own brand furniture polish on tails, not even Mr sheen! They like it but I wouldt put that crap in my own hair so it's not going near my horse.

The new bottles are good for those whose horses hate the 'swoosh' of an ordinary pump bottle.
I don't think the product formulation has changed though, has it?

I use Supreme Products mane and tail conditioner now... prefer it to Canter. Still love the canter coat shine but refuse to buy the new fancy bottles!

If you have any of their old bottles about, tip the new stuff into them. I have quite a few knocking about, I keep them to refill with homemade fly repellent.

I've been using fancy hair oil I got from my hairdresser for myself... I wasn't going through it fast so thought I'd try it on the pony, it's amazing! (And to be fair it works out cheaper than the equine conditioners now!)

I'm not imoressed either!.
It ends up all over the place (other than the mane) as the spray is a bit hit and miss.
I have swapped over to another brand!

Not impressed either....its packaged like a human hair product; spray is rubbish & bottle too tall to stand upright in grooming kit box as well as costing more for less. Keeping an eye on this thread for recommendations for a similar product

Agree with the view that Canter Mane and Tail no longer " does what it says on the tin" - or rather, fancy new package. I, too, have a M&M pony, with thick, long mane and tail. They are mud magnet tangle traps, more time-consuming to groom out than the rest of her put together!
I find liberal amounts of Nettex 7 Day Mud Away used first and brushed well in, topped by their mane/tail spray does a good job. Anything with small amounts of Neem Oil in it is effective too.

Well.. They are more than welcome to come and test their new god-awful design on this M&M.. think cork-screw in a tail. You can detangle it but within the hour it will be back to what it was before.. I only do it for shows and lessons now!

Now.. new brand suggestion anyone? ;)

I use 'mane n tail' de tangled, it's an american brand which you can also use on your on hair, all their products can be used on you or your horse :)

Glad I'm not alone. New packaging for canter is awful. If you try to decant it into an old spray bottle you'll find you can't. Inside it's a bag of liquid which you can't unscrew the top from. It's also brittle packaging, if dropped, the outer casing breaks, leaving the bag vulnerable to splitting.

I was so unhappy I discussed it with my supplier who phoned them to report the problems. They were aware, but won't change back, however for the foreseeable future the 1 litre size will remain in the old packaging and is a much better buy.

I also really hate the new bottles. I can't get the distribution right with the new spray, seem to waste loads and I have also gone through two bottles where I have knocked it and the bottle has broken. Way too delicate for a horse product. Definitely looking for an alternative

I buy the spray bottle from homebase or similar as you can change the whether the liquid comes out in a 'jet' or 'mist' if that makes sense. Then I go and buy the refill bottles of conditioner as it works out so much cheaper. If I have the old bottle lying around I use then as well, same with vitamins and fly spray etc. I always use refills and whatever spare packaging I have lying around.

Just make sure you write over the old label with marker pen!
