Hi all, about 8weeks ago i tooke delivery of my new horse, he is a 16.3 IDxCob, he is 6 years old, and not very well schooled.

The thing i that not every time, but sometimes when i ask him for canter he sets of running an then bucks! he had me off last night cause of this and arnt to sure what it could be, as he was fine the last time!

Do you think he is doing this out of naughtness? or cause soemthing is hurting him? he is fine on the lunge with his tack on when you ask him for canter, he ony does it when you on him??
Any help would be great.

Thanks

Jodie

Because he is doing it with rider on and not without the rider, then I would get his back and saddle checked, definitely.

Meantime, I hope you got back on and made him do a fair bit of work, even in trot, behaving himself after the incident?

At this age especially if they are a bit green, they will try all sorts of different things, and you just have to meet them all with a blank "no, that's not the way to go about things." They try various things, such as buck into canter, especially if a little off balance because they're not used to being ridden, spook but not really afraid, go faster and faster, lean on the bit, toss the head about, stand on you, tug on the leadrope, turn for home even at a walk! You know, all sorts, bear in mind he is a "teenager"

This shouldn't be a problem and its very common. If you're afraid get someone who is very experienced just to do some canter schooling with him a couple of times, which should sort him out if his back and saddle are okay.

If he is off balance, then improve the trot for a couple of weeks and longe the canter, then eventually try it again with you on. If he begins the "run" jsut stop him straight away and go back to trot, don't even let it start.

Good luck, be bossy but kind and fair! He won't bother then.

yeah i think we are going to get Katie out the back woman. you se the girl who i got him off had a very ill fitting saddle on him

Thank you AleeDee you have just described him perfectly!! about the running in to canter an been of balance, maybe i was just pushing him to far to soon! he is fine in trot but does tend to slow down the maybe go abit fast! also he was doing the head thing as well!! lol

I think i just need knuckle down with him an be firm but fair.

Also there is a girl on my yard who is a very goot talaned rider so willask her to do abit or canter work with him first

My cob who I have had for three months used to do that with his last owner , but has never bucked with me not even a bunny hop .
Prob better to concentrate on getting walk trot right and him ballenced and correct in those before trying to get him to canter , as we have done and the canter will come .
