So who has started their canter work?

I started mine last week, in prep for *hopefully* Kirriemuir Novice.

I am lucky enough to have access to some fields, so can just have a good canter round. Unfortunately Shaun has other ideas and just tanks off with me, i have been going into the one with the biggest hill but it doesnt seem to slow him down...he gets so bloody excited and well i just cant hold him!

The field with the big hill also has a small ditch it, which i have been jumping when doing the canter work in the *hope* it will back him off a bit...but that doesnt work! He just flies over it, today he took off miles away and smacked me in the face!

Its lovely that he is so keen, but i need to get him under some kind of control! Do u think after awhile that he will start to relax a bit more and not take such a hold? It is all new to him as we didnt do any canter work last year, just used to have a good gallop down the forest... i dont want to dampen his enthuisiam 2 much :(

TBH I think he may get worse the fitter he gets? Have you tried playing with different bits to see if you can find something more effective? Perhaps until you have some control sorted work in a smaller area and use interval training instead? :)

we have started the canter work with the horses at work, we combine cantering in the arena with the fields (when they are not too wet or full of horses )
like mentioned above it may be worth changing his bit most of our horses are cantered in gag type bits as they can get quite keen:p

happy cantering:)
