my mare has had 4 months off from cantering due to a back back which a chiropractor and physio came out to put mis placements backwere they should be, then the saddle needed altering then her teeth have been done last week, so iv just been walking and trotting her and light excerise , however today i decided to canter her for the first time in four months! she started off doing tiny bronks, bucks and side stepping all whist cantering then the second time she did it again , then the third time she cantered and it was a short strided canter ( she is a showjumper and has a very bouncy in front canter almost like she is cantering on two legs ) do you think this is excitment or not?

What did the vet think of her back? Did they suggest further investigation if light work/ physio didnt help?

Then I think it sounds like you probs need to get the vet out again, if this behaviour continues under saddle

Does your horse behave the same way on the lunge?
My horse had very tight glut muscles... Or Ass muscles. She was resistant to go into canter on 1 rein, and on the other rein would canter like tigger! Very resistant to going forward, after a couple of physio sessions I was told to long rein her for several weeks, avoid lunging at all costs, then increase the long reining to include things like raised trotting poles.

Oops half a post,

Could it be that the horse has come back into normal work a bit too quickly and might need more time to build up strength in back and back end?
Personally I would try a physio first rather than vet if you suspect it's muscular

Could she just be super excited to be cantering again? On the spot bounces and mini broncs could just be pent up enthusiasm...
Can you try sitting in light seat with short reins and sending her on a bit to see if she comes out of it?
