Luckily we have great hilly off road hacking, so I do like to have at least one canter per hack. It's often on the way home as I like to make sure he's really warmed up before we do any really fast work.
I'll only canter with a maximum of two other (sensible) horses - mine's just too unpredictable otherwise.
And unfortunately he has to be in front otherwise it's like cantering a very angry steam train. Luckily he's faster than everything else we hack with so it works out quite well!
As it's taken me a long time to build my confidence up, I still find it amazing that I'm willing to canter, gallop and jump out hacking on a very hot little thoroughbred!! But makes it all worthwhile, nothing like that feeling of power and speed.
