had my lesson last night on kiko and we're teaching him how to canter in the school, its absolutly hilarious what he does with his legs, you ask him to canter and you'll only get a few strides but feel like theres legs everywhere and does mini bunny hops and bucks and then comes to a standstill. When hes following another horse in the school in canter, hes perfect! perfect on a hack as well! its really strange, hes the same on both reins.. has anyone got any tips for getting him to canter properly on his own and maintain it?

Many thanks xx

I have a similar prob- out and about she goes beautifully but in the menage she finds it more difficult- I concentrate on going to a big menage and really pushing along the long sides. it sems to be helping. my horse is a 4 year old so dont expect miracles - just doing easy steps for her.

hes coming on lovely in trot, diagonals, leg yields, 15m & 10m circles keeping a nice steady trot, just canter goes to pot a bit lol

Thanks AmyMay - will give it a go

have you tried cantering on the lunge- he'll just have to learn to balance himself in circles without rider complications.

are you allowing him forward enough? he may not have the strength/balance to go slow. it might feel a bit hairy but a very forward canter might be the answer and then over weeks and months start to slow it down. and obviously try to sit as quietly as possible in a forward seat.
Keep at it- it'll get there!
