Sorry, PC person here... lol.
I don't know what it would be like to lose a friend or family to murder, so I can't comment on that.
But even the chance of executing an innocent person is too much!!
And it's a complex issue anyway, I agree with the points that Mairi has raised. It's too simple to just say "murder.... death penalty", there may be a number of reasons why it happened.
 
No-one is saying that simple murder = death penalty; only 1st degree murder can be given a death penalty, and even then the penalty is hardly ever given. Some people appear to be confused as to what 1st degree murder actually means?

A mentally ill person would not be handed down a death sentance - so this doesn't apply.

There have actually been many cases in the US where people who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia etc, have actually been excecuted.
 
Yes there have been a handful over the years, before mental health issues were more fully understood.
