well my mare capped her hock slightly on news years eve it has a mind of it own with the swelling it goes up and down wiht no kind of pattern also it sometimes has heat in it but others times dont which is getting less and less often

vet se it the day she did it and he wasnt concerned said she had slighly done it had anti inflammatory injection and tablets for 6 days she had no lameness.

just looking for how people dealed with a capped hock and how long it took to settle?

thanks

I used frozen peas for 30 minutes every day [I kept refreezing the peas] that worked I also cold hosed it as well.I think the idea is to treat as quickly as possible to prevent the area remaining enlarged.

Don't mean to ask numpty question but if it keeps coming and going have you made sure she is bedded on a deep soft bed? I always understood that the commonest cause of capped hocks is horses having to lie down on concrete. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest me if your ned already sleeps on a vast pile of 18 tog silk duvets!

Agree with Box of Frogs.
Is she perhaps standing against the stable wall/door and kicking it??? My youngster did this and his hock got slightly capped despite having a huge bed with large banks - but he was a little 'strange'

should have made myself a little clearer sorry lol

she has equimat mats with BIG bed dont ask cant have small beds even though thats the point of mats.

she did it out in the paddock kicking the fence at another horse that horse has been moved so she hasnt done it again unless she is just kicking it for the sake of it lol

just wanted to no how long everyone elses took to settle?

when i say up and down dont mean lots just mean very slightly sometimes looks a little smaller sometimes a bit bigger

have spoken to vet a few times since the first time when he came and see it the day she did it.

Yes make sure you have a good bed down but also if your horse stands against the wall as mine does and slightly sways this will eventually have an affect on the hocks. So my way of curing this is get the thin mattresses of sunloungers and fix them lenght ways at hock hieght on the wall ,as with mine I have them just across the back wall. I also have put a slightly thicker on on the stable door so protecting the knees. Using a gel that you can get from your vet called Tensolvet is masterful at getting ridd of the swellings.
