Why do people alarm their cars at shows?
There was a potentially nasty incident at a little local show I was at on Sunday when a pony being led by a little girl took off when a car alarm went off. I know it's something you may have to cope with out hacking but some of the kids there were tiny & their ponies might never hack out.
It probably bugged even more me as whenever we go camping there is always someone whose alarm goes off at 2am & they are usually parked near our tent & sleep through it!

It might be a case of not having a choice I'm afraid. I know with my car and also many others that when you lock the door the alarm automatically comes on.

If I am going to be away from my car for any length of time then I lock it for safetys sake

not half as annoying as bloody Dogs at shows...

Same as others, our cars alarms go on when we lock them and no way would I not have my van locked when at a show - sad to say but too many thieves about.

My two have been stood next to cars with alarms going off - part of their training. Maybe people should try to do this to get horses used to as many odd sights and sounds as possible. Not a guarantee they won't spook but should reduce the likelihood of this happening.

Most cars, if you lock them with the key rather than the remote button you can stop the alarm coming on.

I stand my horses on the trailer, and if my car had an alarm, I wouldn't lock it, if their movement would make the alarm go off. Instead, my tack is locked in the locker inside the trailer.

Got my car alarm disconnected. Could not see the point of it. How many people do you know who would react when they hear an alarm going off? They just annoy people and dont think they would stop someone stealing your car.
At a show yesterday there was an idiot with a motorbike which backfired in the middle of all the horses and horseboxes. Then when he got the engine running properly he just sat on it revving it up. Then he switched it off, much to peoples annoyance and concern for their horses. He then decided to go and re-started it and drove off!

I was at a show yesterday and my friends car - her 4 x 4 alarm went off when we open the boot- forgot it was locked- but we have to lock the door as the tack was inside- not worth loosing it. I dont find the alarms annoying at all. In fact if your tack was stolen you wouldnt be able to claim under the insurance unless the door was locked. When I take the Equitreck lorry I also lock it if there is no one at the lorry.

Most cars seem to be quite keen on setting the alarms. My OH's car theoretically has a way to deactivate the motion sensor - it works about 50% of the time...

At a county show or similar, car alarms should be the least of your worries - hounds, vintage vehicle displays, gundog displays, clay pigeon shooting, pigs, cows, donkeys etc could all be there and if you're taking a horse into that atmosphere it should be acclimatised to all sorts of things.

I am betting, if you car has an alarm and you choose not to activate it, and the car was then stolen, the insurance company would be within their rights to not pay out in full - afterall, most people who have an alarm get a discount on their insurance for it don't they?

Most cars provide no choice and, yes, it is something that can happen anytime and anywhere.
