Car bonnet mascots....

I am getting a racehorse and jockey to go on my Freelander, its not garish infact it is from the 30s. Racing is my passion so the subject matter is relevent. Trouble is I am wondering if it is a little pretentious. Does anyone else out there have a mascot on their bonnet?

Check that it's legal. The following came off a Jaguar forum:

British law, Regulation 53 Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 states: “No mascot, emblem or other ornamental object shall be carried by a motor vehicle first used on or after 1 October 1937 in any position where it is likely to strike any person with whom the vehicle may collide unless the mascot is not liable to cause injury to such person by reason of any projection thereon.”

Clearly the spring loaded Mercedes and Rolls Royce mascots are deemed to be legal under this definition, setting a legal precedent under British law for the fitting of spring loaded mascots because the spring mechanism makes it 'not liable to cause injury ....'

The European External Projections Directive of 1993 specifically allows spring loaded mascots - and one can only suppose that this resulted from huge lobbying pressure from the likes of Mercedes to protect the use of their iconic symbol. There is no doubt whatsoever that this European legislation carries the full weight of law in Britain. Put simply, what this means is that if some local jobsworth plod tried it on by charging a Jag owner for fitting a leaper, and if the CPS decided to take it to court on a test case basis and the court ruled against the driver, then the conviction would certainly be thrown out on appeal to the European Court. Britain is bound to maintain the legislation covering all member states.

You don't see many these days, they used to be very popular. I would think because everyone is so much more safety conscious they have declined. There are a few round here mainly on cars driven by very posh little old ladies who don't go fast enough to cause any damage. A friend of mine had a little mouse on her old freelander. She now has a new model and the mouse is blutacked to the dashbboard instead!!
