Hi

I currently own a Peugeot which is up for sale. It was MOT'd today and passed, but the tax is due to run out at the end of this month.

I collect my new car this Friday and my insurance company say I will have to pay a difference of £58 from my old car to my new car to swap the insurance over.

Now comes the tricky part. Just been on DVLA to take out six months tax disc which runs out on the 31st October and it says "I confirm that there is valid insurance covering the use of the vehicle when the tax disc starts". Well there won't be will there?

So I looked about the information regarding Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) and found this:

I am selling my vehicle. Do I have to declare SORN?

No, you only need to make SORN if the tax runs out before you sell the vehicle and you keep the vehicle off the public road.

The trouble is that if someone comes to view the car and they want to take it for a test drive up the road this would be very dodgy ground and illegal to boot.

The only thing I can think of is that if I ask my insurance company if I can extend my insurance on the Peugeot by one month thereby allowing me to

a) take out a tax disc
b) allow someone to drive it legally (albeit third party only insurance).

But I am not sure if you can insure more than one vehicle at a time. Anyone know whether you can or not??
Has anyone ever come across this scenario? Can anyone advise? I really need to have the car taxed or I doubt I will sell it.

Yes you can insure more than one vehicle (I do) but you will only be able to apply your NCB to one car. I would call your insurance and see what they can do for you.

A car must be insured whether sitting on your drive or not - only a sorn vehicle requires no insurance.

As other OP advised you can only use one set of NCB per car insurance, if I need temporary cover I use Aviva online short term cover ( obviously with 0 NCB ).

I hope this helps....pm if you need further info

When you phone them tomorrow - do also ask whether people doing a test drive would be covered to drive it, or whether you would have to be the driver. When I was selling mine, my own insurance didn't cover anybody else and I asked people to bring their insurance paperwork showing that they were insured to drive other cars if they wanted to test-drive mine. I wouldn't let two guys drive it who "forgot" their paperwork - they had to sit beside my brother for a tour of local roads.

There are several insurance companies that offer short-term insurance (a week or a month), which might work out cheaper than having to buy a whole year on the car and then get a refund minus admin fees. Perhaps get a quote before ringing your insurance company.

When you are selling, do have somebody else around for your own safety and think twice before letting a stranger test-drive your car without somebody else with them. Have you tried a quote from WeBuyAnyCar.com? It might be easier to sell it to them this weekend!

Ha I have and they said £255. Think I could get at least £500 for it, - I have got it on for £550 so we will see.

Worth a try. Really don't want to scrap it as its a nice car to drive, just a bit old like me!! :D
