Car people: Is 100k miles alot on a 4x4 petrol?

I probably wouldn't buy a petrol with that kind of milage, but a diesel with go on for miles more.

Having said that, I drive a KA petrol with 145k, and my Dad a diesel Merc with 123k - last diesel died at 225k.

mine has 178K on the clock, i would be more interested in a full service history, if it has been looked after well it should last if not i wouldnt buy it with that many miles.

my N reg disco (3.9L V8 petrol - automatic) has done 146K miles. I've had it about 5yrs and have probably put 20K miles on it - nearly all towing.

don't know if I dare say this in case it hears but the engine has not given me any significant problems.

It's not excessive for it's age - 10k a year ish (average for pricing is approx 12) agree re service history

Don;t know when they are due on those but would be worth checking Cam Belt has been changed

Modern cars can deal with high mileage and big engines cope better than an 1100cc would. As previous people have said, diesels can do 100k with ease. My current trooper has 98k, my husbands has 169k. My last one died because of the rust worm, but the engine and mechanics were perfect at 180k.

I used to sell Shoguns, the mitsubish range were guaranteed for 3 years or 100,000 miles, and that was years before anyone else gave those sort of warranties. That Shogun will probably do rubbish mpg though, so I would look for an old diesel one.

My problem is the age of it, i have a private plate and need to have a 2000 year or more.

Because my plate starts with an 'X' your not allowed to buy an R-reg and put the plate on making the car look newer than it is, its illegal unfortunatley.

I would say its stupid to buy a high mileage car if you do a lot of miles, but if its a second car that sits around and does the 12k average yearly mileage then its a great way of getting a bargain....
oh and would be conserned if a 10 year old car had less than 100k.. also condition is much more important than mileage with older cars

No, i think your just get problems if you buy a petrol with that many miles, my vauxhall frontera 4x4 had only 60k on it when the engine went and ive spend so much money on it (dont touch frontera's) try to get the most reliable make with the lowest miles.

I wouldn't get a petrol with that high milage for towing, petrol engines normally start to pack in after 100K miles, and I would want something reliable for towing.
(Speaking from experience - broke down with a 4yr old in the trailer next to a busy A road!!!)

Total mileage of a vehicle is pretty well meaningless as a gauge of condition. A vehicle which has done it all on long motorway trips, been well serviced, and been fuelled with good fuel will run great. 1 that has done the same mileage in short urban journeys, never had its oil changed, and been run on supermarket petrol will be a bag of spanners.

Is it really vital that you have the plate on it? Why not just put your plate to one side until you need another new car in the future? Don't see the point of restricting your choices on it's age alone TBH
