Hi All, can I pick all of your brains for some advice please....My 2 GSPs are 11 and in really good health and thoroughly enjoy car rides and trips to the woods etc so they use the car quite regularly. Ive noticed the last few times that one of them hesitates before jumping up and yesterday actually fell back down and really upset himself and me !!
Ive thought for a while about getting a ramp but after a few homemade attempts it seems really difficult to get them to use it.
My vehicle is a landrover discovery so it is really quite high up for an older dog to jump and I just wondered if any of you had any joy in purchasing one, which brand you recommend and any training tips to get them to use it with confidence.
Putting them in the well or backseat is not an option as they will just try to get on my lap and far too dangerous and I really don't want to stop their trips for walks or to visit people so would be really grateful for any advice.
Thanks in advance !!!:)

My mum got one for their older dog (terrier) but he really doesn't like it, so he now jus gets lifted in. I tried to use it for mine (GSD x rottie) to help his hips, but he also didn't really like it and jumps in quicker than I can assemble it lol. He will have to use it one day though, as there's no way I can lift him in! I can't remember who its made my, but it has a grippy sandpapery surafce for them to walk on, and folds into three. It is cumbersome and a PITA to have in the car thought :o

Thanks Stencilface.I have to say I cant see how I am going to get them to use it !! Laughed at yours getting in quicker than you could assemble the thing!!! I am the same no way I can lift mine in.Would be in a and e with a bad back !!! Its a worry really as I cant change my car as need it for towing the horse !! Suppose could put the trailer on and take the dogs round in that !!! LOL !!!:) Thanks for your input :D

We bought one of these from Coopers of Stortford when one of our terriers got too 'mature' to jump in my CRV. ;)

It is very sturdy and well made and folds in two very simply. It is reasonably light and I just stowed it behind the front seat in the car. It has a grippy surface too.

Dougal was wary of using it at first but we lured in up it a few times with a yummy treat and he soon got the hang of it.

We covered our ramp in carpet so it was non-slip and a surface the dogs are used to. Try practising indoors leaning it up on a sofa or something similar so your dog can get used to it.

We had a wire one with a vet bed cover for our great dane. Didn't work out so we bought her a van of her own a Renault Kangoo white van back just fitted out in plywood, boy were people surprised when we opened the back doors and she popped out:D As you can tell we adored that girl:D

We bought this one 12 months ago as our lab has double cruciate reconstructions.

It's brilliant - sturdy, light, stable and very non slip. We got her used to it by starting off lying it flat and getting her to walk along it, and then gradually raising one end until we got it to the right height. With lots of treats and praise it only took her 2/3 sessions to get the hang of it. Now she uses it like a trooper, and our vehicle is high too (Mitsuibishi ASX)

Brilliant! thanks everyone.Hadn't even crossed my mind to practise on the sofa and bed...car ramp ordered.treats bought and fingers crossed for a good outcome. Thank you all for helping. really appreciate it xxxx:)
