Hi as it says need advice for a new car please :)

Have a discovery for towing trailer also have a Rav 4 that I want to change as I am sure it eats the fuel whilst standing still !

I am happy to go for something smaller but still need something sturdy enough to cope with the potholes & get me to the yard at least twice a day & hopefully still get me there when the weather turns bad.

- I have had a quick look at the Suzuki Jimny , looks like I could still fit the kids & the dog in but only seem to see 3 door ones (doesn't look like the do a 5 door? ) - would anyone recommend them or not - mpg looks slightly better than the Rav

Or are there any other sturdy cars that anyone would advise looking at - it would also be nice to have a car that does more than 30mpg :D

Golf, plenty roomy in the back with the seats down for five shaving bales, 1.9d are pretty economical and then they can whizz too!
 
Cost... Don't want to spend a fortune - as will only be normally be used for running to yard & back & I suppose no more than £10k - depends what it is though as may have to swop it with other half when taking horses out
Hadn't thought about a golf are they ok in the snow ? - all input appreciated as I haven't much idea x
 
Toyota yaris, it runs on fresh air (or my diesel version does!!) and I treat it like a 4 wheel drive.....it's also fab in the snow. Just depends if u want to go that small, but I love mine......it's also very nippy!!
 
I've got a Nissan Qashqai - higher off the ground so good for not falling to pieces down a pothole (and great for nosing over hedges ;)) and loads of space. I don't use mine for towing - I'm assuming you aren't looking for that though? Great for kids as good visibility and proper seat belt in middle position in the back. Good in the snow. Mine has got the extra seats in the boot but it's still easy to park etc when out and about. Heated seats good after being freezing with the horses!
 
Don't mind going small - will have a look at the yaris - just didn't know if a 'normal' car would stand up to the potholes we have going to & from the yard 2 or 3 times a day ?
 
Theres a lot of smaller 4x4s easily in your price range. Suzuki Vitara, Rav4, Honda CRV are the most popular. The Jimny is good but an old design - you may find it too small. The Nissan Qashqui looks useful too x
 
Thanks for all your input given me some more ideas - Will have to start a proper search soon - not too keen on car shopping x
 
I used to have a Golf and although it was great to drive in normal conditions, it was absolutely rotten in snow, no traction at all. After the Golf I had a Ford Focus 1.8 tdi and it was fab to drive, stuck to the road like glue, good acceleration and good mpg. Cheaper to buy than a VW and cheaper to service too.
 
I must confess I loathed my Qashquai, but I had the 1.6 petrol engine without 4x4 option and it was deathly slow, really small wheels and fairly poor road holding, and was, believe it or not, less economical that the Landrover Defender I swapped it for!!
 
Suzuki SX4 4wd version. Normal car size, 5 door and can be locked in 4wd when needs be. Otherwise is 2wd. I have a fiat Sedici which is the same (fiat just bought the 4wd model) It has been a good car for 3 years so far. Not a huge boot but big enough, unless you have a giant dog! You will def get one for under 10k. They are not THE most fuel economic but you don't get many cars with 4wd.
