Car suggestions for bad weather/icy roads

I'm scared to eve look at winter tyre prices, although I must weigh this up against totalling my car, as I have to travel some horrific roads to get to yard.

Depends on the size of the wheels. Some winter tyres are not as expensive as you think.

Oh they will make a difference. No one in their right mind drives over here without snow tyres.

Another Winter tyre convert here. We run Pirelli Snow Control tyres on the wife's Fiesta - fantastic . A guy at work has a contract with a tyre company where they take his tyres off and store them until he needs to swap back and I think a lot of the better tyre people do this.
I bought another set of rims so just swap as and when I need to at home
Hope you find the Polo handles the rough conditions much better.

yeah that sounds about right. My Yaris and Jazz had marangonis in that similar size and they were £40 each. check www.mytyres.co.uk they do sometimes have tyres cheaper than elsewhere.
it may seem an expensive outlay but you do end up saving money on tyres if you keep swapping with your summer tyres every six months as they end up getting a rest so they last longer. For me its a win win situation.
