Anyone had any experience of cardoard bedding?? Interested in any views good or bad. I am currently using sundown on deep litter system (mon-fri) at £6.20 per bale

I get through approx 1/2 bale every other day. what do you pay for cardboard bedding and what is it like compared to shavings or sundown?

I have used cardboard but prefer paper because it is more absorbant. Paper blows about more than cardboard but other than that i find paper much better. I pay about £5.50 a bale and it is very economcal.

I wouldnt recomend it for deep litter though because it would get heavy to remove. I take out the wet every day.

I like paper because there is no smell of ammonia and no dust. Most other bedding you get one or the other or both but paper is very good for the horse.

I have used cardboard for the first time this winter for a RAO horse, and I have to say I love it- however the horse that is on it is quite clean and always pees/poos in the same spots. I dont know how well it would stand up to a horse that peed all over the place, I think you'd be taking alot up.

Anyway, I deep litter mine on rubber mats. I have 20 mins to skip out before work so I am quick! poo out and then I quickly scrape out the wet that has come to the top and then re-lay the bed. I'm adding a bale a week and use a quick sprinkle of Bio-Fresh and no amonia- like it alot. I bought 25 bales which worked out at £4.50 a bale- and 7 to set up a box. So its quite cost effective.

Got my messy horse on wood pellets though- and would use nothing else for a messy one- easy to find scattered poo and cheap! (but dusty).

I pay £4.70 per bale of Shreddy Bed, it's great stuff and have saved a fortune since changing over from shavings. Had a very clean RAO horse and just took poos out every day and wet out twice a week. My other horse is a bit messy so I muck out properly everyday.

i really rate it, have used Ecobed for years, however have very very wet messy mare in this year and am trying wood pellets to see if that works out cheaper.
i prefer the cardboard though, nicer to muck out, warmer, cleaner... just the cost deterring me at the moment...!
