Cardboard bedding - can it be deep littered?

I currently have my horses on deep litter shavings - the beds are about 12" deep and I put a new bale of shavings in weekly. I was thinking about using shredded cardboard due to the cost of shavings and was wondering if anyone had deep littered them or whether I will just end up with a load of mush and end up using twice as much cardboard as I do shavings. I read on the EcoBed website that you should clear out all of the old bed before starting a new cardboard bed but with 20+ boxes to dig out this would not be feasible. Could I just use cardboard bedding on top of the established shavings base?
I was looking at some shredded carboard bales on Ebay - has anyone used them?

I've tried deep littering with cardboard but I don't find it works well. I generally take the wet out once a week as it was costing too much taking it out every day.

My friend has tried adding them to her deep litter shavings bed but has changed back now as she didn't find them very good mixed.

I use Ecobed but on top of rubber (although I still use a very good depth of bedding) which does work very well. I muck out one a day and skip out three times a day.

A while age when I was working extra hours, i did deep litter and take the wet out once a week and skip out three times a day. I found it worked really well because the wet became quite solid and didn't mix with the clean. The stables didn't smell until I disturbed the wet.

I don't think it would work very well mixed with shavings. Could you change one stable at a time - so take out the shavings in one stable, use them in the remaining stables and then replace the first one with cardboard?

i've used Ecobed for years. i forgot to order a few months ago and had to use shavings for a few weeks while waiting for an order, and just put cardboard in on top of shavings when new deliv came. it was fine. i don't like deep litter but can't see what the problem would be with doing it with Ecobed.
