Was there, saw it, deeply saddened. Think if this is to continue it needs a serious rethink. Not to detract from Ollie's win, but I personally thought the most accomplished and fluent round came from Lucy W. and Shabrak. JMHO

JAFFA CAKE what do you think on the following: This is not my opinion as I was not there so do not want to be held to ransom but two friends from the yard went to watch and they saw some riders deliberately going the wrong side of the flags, or deliberately causing their horses to run out and their impression was that as there were only 20 riders competing and the sponsors and public wanted some 'sport' which was fair enough the riders felt obliged to compete even after walking the course which must have left some of them wondering how safe it was. She wondered whether the riders were under 'contract' so to speak and therefore were told by the organisers no withdrawals, but if you want to deliberately get eliminated its your decision. As I say I wasn't there but I trust my friends judgement and if that is what they felt then I bet they were not the only ones. Please dont shout at me if this post has caused any offence to anyone.

Your friend saw a different event than I did - and I was there. I didn't see anyone who looked like they deliberately got eliminated or went the wrong side of the flags. Who would, with £100,000 at stake? And also, I don't believe any competitor at that level would agree to something that they knew would potentially harm their horse - which is, after all, their livelihood. Your friend needs glasses.

I was there.

Although I don't agree with your freind I can see how she formed that view. The course was clearly daunting - even to such seasoned riders. The 2 "celebreties" had done a breif round and both horses were slipping badly. Tara PT retired after her horse almost went over. You could see the skid marks on the ground. Although I accept no professional's horse skidded like that, probably partly good riding and possibly better studs.

What was being asked of the horses - and the riders - was really new. Most of the horses were very brave and tried but you could see they didn't understand being asked to do all this in one day and in the odd order. My results list, compiled as the day went on shows 3 eliminated for the wrong course; 5 eliminated for 3 refusals. Thats almost half the field - at level an astonishing amount.

I note from the prize list that every rider got at least £3000 just for turning up. Fine - probably necessary to attract riders of that calibre for a new event like this. Anyone who actually completed got more.

No-one would do anything to harm thier horses. These are thier livelyhood if nothing else - and that I think sells them far short. I can't imagine any rider at any level deliberately hurting or risking thier horse.

I think the idea was good - could of done without Arlene Phillips and Lord LW. But the idea was decent. The arena wasn't suitable, the seating wasn't well thought out. And in my wholly uninformed view I have some concerns about the safety of the jumps - but I'm sure the relevant safety authority will address that in due course.

I'd hate to see a good idea die - I don't think thats what the riders, least of all Mary, would want either. But it does need a LOT more thought and planning before it is re-staged.

As I posted in the other thread applecart where you posted the same thing I couldn't agree either with your friends view but it has already been shown that those in different places in the arena saw very different things. The only stop which I would perhaps say the rider wasn't 100% riding it (and it would have been marginal) was Tina's last one and to be honest I don't blame her if she wasn't committed to jumping it. Miners Frolic had already had 2 stops at the corners concerned and the likely hood of him jumping on 3rd attempt was slim to none. But she did ride straight and with purpose and half these riders look like they are doing nothing but infact are riding more forcefully that the majority of the rest of us can!!

i had a good day i liked it yes i think more work needs to be done on it, but its like that with any new event (ones not even in the horse world) well done to all the ppl to do with EE roll on next year

my thought are with you mary
