Care after covering

Druid,We have a couple of mares in Ireland at the moment they are both with foals each mare cost's28 euro a day both have been over there since Feb,the cost may be minimal if you are paying 20k plus but ours are in the 3/10k fee, keep is one of those costs that can and does escalate.I have spent time working at the Royal Studs and The National Stud in Newmarket,as well as managing The leading NH stud in England for 15 years,in all studs the teaser's and Stallions were never kept in the barns with mares as it was considered both by us and the veterinary advice that the risk of turning mares was too great.

We'll agree to disagree then - although you do seem to be sticking your head and ignoring all the facts and scientific evidence which back up the view it's an old wive's tale. You haven't provided a shred of evidence that mares could be "turned" as you call it by being in the presence of a gelding or stallion

Druid, thats fine, but tell me working on your stud are you saying you have NEVER heard the phrase 'turning'or returning?or another one is 'old dreg' a name given to a mare who keeps returning,?

No, we don't call it turning - she's either coming in, well on, flat on, going off or gone off. Old dreg is alot nicer than most names I reserve for mares who don't go in foal!!

Yes Druid,I know those names for the dreg mares as well!I've never heard to one 'flat on'all of the others we would say, our flat on would be called 'raging on'.
