Pony is having iv sedation in a couple of weeks for farrier and dentist.

Afterwards should I rug him up while he comes back round? He's unclipped xx
 
Ask the vet, it will also depend on what the weather is doing. My vet told me not to leave unattended or give hay until fully back round again. Apparently a horse had managed to kill itself by resting its head over the stable door while still dopey.
 
Agree with EKW - a cooler is best as it is likely he will sweat.

I also recommend making sure he doesn't have any food until he properly comes round, because there is the risk of choking.
Water is fine, as long as you keep an eye on him.

You could always ask the vet for extra advice on the day :)
 
My lad who is clipped entirely had to have his turnout on as he went the opposite way and got very cold!
No feed or hay for around an hour afterwards, untill they are back with you entirely. My lad had to be tied up as when I took his hay away he started trying to eat his straw! I did give him his lick at about the 45min stage as he was aware enough to start getting fractious (he isn't wonderful at the whole standing still thing at the best of times) as there is no chance he can choke on a lick (15kg block in floor based bucket!)
 
I usually find its a couple of hours before Apache comes round enough to eat.

Just make sure he's warm enough and don't let him eat until fully recovered.

Also - Apache sees to wee for england afterwards, so don't be surprised if his bed it wetter the following day.
 
I agree with above advice and also I always leave stable door open with chain across to prevent horse potentially strangling itself by hanging its head over the door.
 
H gets sedated for clipping I find he sweats but also shivers so as clipped he usually has a quilt on.
Vet says no food til he's fully sober, for H that doesn't seem to take long but I still leave it 3-4 hours. He has water.
oh agree re the weeing for England part too!
 
Mine had lots of sedation due to various issues & veterinary treatment. He always sweated afterwards. Also absolutely nil by mouth until they are totally and fully awake and normal. You need to sweep up properly to remove all the bits of hay. I used to hang around for a while, then leave him in peace for an hour or so then go back and turn out or feed if all was ok (depending on time of day and the treatment he had had) TBH the vet will give you full instructions (or should)
 
Vet said no food for an hour and then can go back to field if awake enough, there's not much grass in there now. I will stay with him all the time.

Should I pop his turnout on until later that day? He's being done 8.30am ish. He's never worn it but got one just in case. It's a 50g breathable turnout xx
