My mare has severe bruising to her toe area on her near fore which left her on three legs and unwilling to put any weight onto the foot at all

She has been on box rest since Tuesday, with the foot hot poulticed (drawing out the blood on advice from the vet following xrays) and heavily padded. This morning I walked her out of the stable and she was a little better, but still quite sore

The thing is, she started off hopping out, but when she had been out for a little bit (just tied up) she seemed much happier and walked out on it better.

I was wondering how much box rest people usually give horses with bruising? I was thinking of putting her in the field for a little while tomorrow... but will this make the bruising worse if she goes out with a poultice and padding?

differences of oppinion lol. Every one has a diffrent view. If the bruising is severe then i woudl box rest until sound.

However, if the bruising is getting better andnot too savere i would turn out. In your case i would be tempted to box rest, cold or dry poluticing to draw the bruising now.

Is she on bute? or danilon or the types.

If so, i would keep her on a maintence of this until she is completly happy.

She was on Danilon until today... but to be honest, how much she has been getting is debatable because she is a bit stressy being in again full time and will not really eat her feed because of it

She was pretty fit before this, so she is not settling easily

I will do a dry poultice from tomorrow then, after all the foot will be staying soft with the hot tubbing and warm poulticing won't it?

yes. you could do with dry poulticing it now to dry it up a bit.

if she is still uncomfortable i would keep up with the danilon.

if shes quite livly, is she liable to run round if you let her out? cause she will make herself worse if she does.

Would it be worth giving her some arnica tablets to help with healing am normally a bit sceptical about homeopathy but a friend suggested arnica to help with a horrid bruise i had that wouldnt come out and it really helped.

I don't have any Danilon left now... the vet only gave me 4 sachets

If she went out with my other mare and yearling she would not run around much, but if she went out on her own she would do.

well there will be pro's and cons of both.. if you leave her in shes gonna get het up and throw her self about..

If you turn her out then she could make it worse.

Put her out for a couple of hours and see?

hope it comes good soon.

Thanks... I think we have a long haul of not riding ahead which is a nightmare because I had only just got her fit and ready to compete after 9 months away

My young TB has had a bruised sole for the last 2 weeks - he was hopping but has got to the stage where he's just a bit unlevel now.

I've had to leave him out - he would climb the walls on box rest and do himself much more damage than he ever would being out. I've left the other one out with him and luckily they've both been very sensible.

I also think they're better wandering round keeping themselves supple wherever possible - they don't half stiffen up on box rest. I do realise though that with some injuries you just don't have the choice.

Thanks... I am beginning to think it might do her some good to go out for an hour or two with it heavily padded and covered. I do wonder whether a little bit of the 'lameness' is actually the fear that it will be sore after how much pain she was in???

My horse has had a bruised foot. He was sound in a straight line but felt it on the turns. Vet recommended 1 wk box rest and 1 wk walking.
If she is as bad as you say then definately don't turn out.

When my boy had a suspected bruised sole (ended up being an abscess) I turned him out with a Hoofeeze boot on, gave excellent padding and protection and miracle of all miracles stayed on. Used it the other day when he threw a shoe so is a handy piece of kit. You can get them on the internet for about £30 and they are really good and soooo easy to put on (unlike other similar boots). Have a search on the web but in my opinion it was £30ish very well spent and you can poultice underneath it and use it on their foot in their stable too as well as when turned out. Good luck

Thanks... I put a dry poultice on last night as she has now had a hot one on since Tuesday morning. Nothing is coming out anymore, and the vet suggested I dry poulticed on Friday.

I walked her out a little as she was a bit stressy. On the concrete she was still very very lame, but in the arena she was 100% better. Not quite sound in walk, but as I said, a huge improvement.

The vet wants the shoe back on this coming week, so I am thinking of leaving it until Thursday (last day my farrier is up here) and seeing how she is then. I think a little bit of this is down to her not having a shoe on, especially now we know how thin her soles are.

I am also hoping to get the farrier to fit some kind of pad into her feet... but the first priority is getting her sound first

I know it's time consuming, but I've had great sucess in the past with horses going out after box rest, by leading them out on a lunge line, so they can't go ballistic, and just standing in the field with them. I did this some years ago for days on end, with a book in my pocket to read, and eventually detached the lunge line and all was peace and calm as she'd already got used to going out

give arinica to help bruiseing come out and cover the foot in eucolittis oil sorry about spelling. that makes the hoof solid and poltice over that and keep on turning out at day to walk around then bring in at night so she can rest her hoof if she wants to!
