Hi all,
First time writing in but it feels like the right place to turn to.
As you will see from my username, I used to freelance, I haven’t done for almost 5 years now.

I started working with horses when I was 14, I worked on racing studs, large competition livery yards, then worked for myself for different clients, I then left the industry when I was 22 to pursue my love for the dairy industry, this is where I am now 5 years later.
I am an artificial inseminator on dairy farms and I have enjoyed most of it, the. challenges and the different farms, it’s been hard and sometimes dangerous but it’s also been very rewarding. However, I am losing the love for the job and the lack of work life balance.

My partner and I farm at home as well, I moved away to be with him on his farm and unfortunately due to work commitments and the move away, I put my horse on full loan 2 years ago with a close friend of mine, it was the right decision for us both at the time as she was being wasted and I didn’t have the time. She now has the best life with her loaner and I do think she will have a home for life with her.

Recently I have been searching for a new job, something to give me a better work life balance, but also something I enjoy. I have never stopped loving horses and I often have a little cry to myself about how I miss it and how myself as a little girl would be so upset knowing I finally managed to have my own pony just to give it all up.

To cut a long story short - am I making a stupid decision to even consider going back into groom work? Am I just romanticising it because I am so depressed in my current job? I was younger and had less responsibilities when I last worked with horses and of course it’s going to feel like the best times of my life were when I was working with horses, but is that not reality?

I am on a decent salary now and I doubt any grooms job could match that, but then I think I’d be happier so what’s the price of that? I also miss having a horse and it’s something I’d like to get back into again, but money!!!
I’m so lost and I just need to know if I’m being ridiculous going back into the equine industry in my late twenties!

Sorry for the long winded story, hopefully it makes sense!!
Thank you for reading!

Do a trial at a yard. I considered giving up my corporate job for a grooms job about a year ago and my partner convinced me to do a trial before handing in my notice and thank god he did because I HATED it.

And I say that as someone who lives for animals and horses and being outside muddy. It was backbreaking and the pay was atrocious.

It’s all well and good thinking less money is fine but when reality kicks in and you’re taking home 12 quid an hour it’s very sobering very quickly…

That’s a very good idea!

Did you take annual leave from your job to do a trail? Or did you risk leaving and then go back?

The money is definitely a big factor!!

You'll be poor and hurt all the time and still have to get up early. It's not a 9-5, nothing with animals is.

Weird question but how did you get into your current job, it sounds reallyinteresting

Very true!

I have a family background in dairy farming and have worked on a few farms milking, I’ve always enjoyed genetics and breeding, so I decided I wanted to become an AI Technician, I love being out and about and speaking with different people everyday and I just LOVE cows! I paid to do a DEFRA course through a training company, but lots of vets also provide the same course, I then applied for a job as an AI Tech for a genetics company and that was all really! It’s very interesting and rewarding, just not the most favourable job in the industry!
