ok so at the moment i'm trying to figure out what i'm going to do i have completely changed my mind about what i want to do but i dont know what to. I've been looking into careers with horses and i am well aware of the hard work and little pay that can come out of it but i was just wondering who all on here has jobs working with horses and what are they? are they rewarding?

sorry i guess i just need to know if its worth talking the risk in drastically changing my career decision

I'm a pet sitter. Bread and butter stuff is the dog walking but do I have a few horsey clients which I love doing. I think the problem where I live is most people are on livery yards so when they go away they either get a friend to help or they pay YO.

No worries. If you want more info then pm me and I'll send you my home number - I can talk about it till the cows come home lol!

Ive worked at the following places:

Yearling prep/racehorse recuperation yard, really enjoyed that, rewarding, opportunity to travel, got very fit/tanned (superficial I know) would have been on same pay forever unless I was prepared to move round the country to larger yards.

Show hunter yard (loved the riding and the sole charge aspect, hated the underhand and occasionally very bad treatment of horses) - was PA/Groom to possibly the most unpleasant and unreasonable woman in the UK (sorry if you're reading this Mrs B but you are)

Event yard (fantastic, got to meet the NZ olympic team when they stayed, travelled all over, had a ball but NO life outside the job, at all)

A job (as a groom) with horses is only as good as the employer and if you get a bad one they have the potential to make your life hell. But - a good employer makes all the difference - can be hugely rewarding (not rewarding enough for me, I decided that I wanted my weekends/evenings back, and I wanted to keep my horse as my hobby as opposed to my career). Never regret moving away from horses.
