Not sure if this is soapbox or NL so apologies!

I have just been offered a really challenging job as a Manager working 9am - 6pm and it could involve staying away from home reguarly as well as being a HUGE step up from my current role. I live in the city the job is in so thats good but my horse is 20 mins away (more in rush hour!) so that means I won't be up there till approx 6.45pm every evening sometimes a bit later. I already have the YO to turn out for me in the morning if he is in due to bad weather but I will not pay her to do him in the evenings as seeing him is like my therapy every night and I really don't want to give that up.

I am just not sure how I will cope with all the pressure and having no time for myself! Does anyone else go up the yard late in the evening as well as working a challenging career? I obviously want to spend as much time as possible with Orkan but don't want to upset my new employer. Thank goodness for floodlit schools eh?
 
i used to be down at the yard late too, just go for it. like you say, seeing him is your thearepy, so don't give that up!
the start of winter is always harsh, but will only be another couple of months til it starts getting nicer.

Could you maybe try the other way round, get up early and ride him before work? Several of the people at my yard come down early (6ish), ride for an hour then go back home and get ready for work. This might work better as at least then you wouldn't be stressed or tired after a long day at work, plus roads should be quieter. Depends if you can face the early mornings though!
 
Do the horse in the morning, and get YO to bring him in in the evening.

Or - do horse in the morning - but leave in for YO to turn out. Get YO to bring in - and go back to yard to ride and finish off.

I do a combination of both of these and it works well.

If you are young, you will cope! I used to work in London, do my horse before, change in the feed room and commute by tube, then do it all in reverse in the evening. I also had a job in the pub two nights a week to make ends meet.

While it wasn't that much of a stressful job, it was demanding enough and I coped, although it was hard work at times getting up so early. I also did a deal with another livery and we shared some evenings.

I couldn't begin to do that now though! It might be worth paying YO one night a week to do him just so you can socialise with friends after work - that's important too.

Good idea about YO doing him one day a week so I can socialise with work people or other friends. I wouldn't mind giving up one day a week.

I could do a couple of mornings a week and the rest evenings - that is a good plan SS....

Ah I would be a stresshead without HHO!

I have to be honest, I'm resigned to early bed times, and stupid o'clock getting up on the winter. And having moved back to a livery yard recently (from a friends) am finding life much less stressful (with the assitance that is offered).

I work in sales, cover the whole of the west of the UK and am usually out on the road 4 days out of 5. Horse in on a livery package that means YO TO, BI and mucks him out mon-fri for me, I just ride, fill haynets and make feeds. If I leave enough nets and feeds made up, she will put them in if I can't get there. I regularly leave the house before 8am to drive to customer sites (today I have done 250 miles), all day with customers, then go to the yard. I'm usually at the yard between 6.15 and 6.45pm. If I know I'm going to be later, I get YO to do him for me (book this in advance in yard diary, though she will do him at short notice if traffic bad etc). Get to yard, tack up and ride, then fill nets and do feeds. Home about 8.15pm.

I have absolutely no life whatsoever in the week but as I have a fair bit of admin for work to do in the evenings, it's not an issue. I try to make up for it at the weekends!

It is do-able. It's exhausting to start with but you get used to it. I am looking to move into management in the next couple of years so it's only going to get more hectic for me I think! Last winter he was on part livery (so everything done 7 days a week) but I didn't like the lack of control so have reached a different agreement with YO this winter which suits us both. Makes my life easier just to have him mucked out mon-fri then I do him at weekends.
