Hello all

My 10 y/o Cairn x Corgi has just had a large kidney stone removed, plus one small crystal. Have any of you had a dog who has suffered with these, and can recommend a diet / supplement moving forward? We are looking at chicken and rice and peas for now, he has always had mackerel mixed in with Millies Wolfheart but as a complete food this may no longer be suitable.
Grateful for any advice, thank you.

I am currently going through similar with my “new entry “ ,ex breeder ,schnauzer.
In her case the stones are in her bladder..we saw them on x ray after concerns for Infrequent urination issues…
we put the dog on oxalate foodwhich induced her to drink more often and after two weeks she started to lose a stone a day in her urine..

We also scald the kibble to add more water to her diet

At this point some stones were sent to be analysed, and they were mostly struvites. At this point we switched to a struvite diet( hills cd) and her urine has returned to neutral( ph7)
There remain three large stones curently( there were more than twelve) and we will continue with this diet for a few months. We will re x ray in three weeks to see if the stones are dissolving..
I found a site that really is informative/ helpful.
See all four types and treatments vary accordingly

My key points are

it is vital to have the stone analysed to see what type of crystal your dog has ..there are four types..oxalate, struvite ,being the most common..

The dog should be encouraged to drink often..we use a spoonful of goats kefir in water ,twice a day and she drinks it all..( as well as leaving her a water bowl in each room.). An hour later she wees copiously which has helped flush her bladder and has helped restabilise her ph.
Until you analyze the stones, you can’t choose a suitable diet..so this is a vital first step in deciding your food choice for him as you progress.

good luck,it’s a new journey for me too..and I found it reassuring to have a plan..regular check ups,urine test,( for bacteria,ph etc) x ray.etc..
