What a fantastic day!!!

Really early start, got up at 4.30 to feed and muck out, then off we set to Carlton, left 3 hours to get there but actually only took 2 and a half so got there with loads of time.

Walked the XC and was a little concerned about my steering in the hackamore, lots of tight turns and lots of turning right (J doesnt turn right

tongue.gif
) The water looked very nasty, so decided to go the long route as J can be a bit sticky at water anyway. Thought it looked quite testing overall, but not nasty.

Decided to lunge him before the dressage and then hopped on for 10mins, he felt great and had we gone when we were supposed to think he would have done a super test, but was delayed a bit so he got a bit flat and bored and started p***ing about so had to really grab hold and ride him. So the first half of the test was very on the forehand, but he was sweet and soft so I was happy. His first canter transition was lovely, first time he has done a decent one in a test. Finished on a score of 38.5, and got some lovely comments, main issue being him being too low which is easily fixed

On to the SJing....

On went the hackamore, and we warmed up, he was jumping huge
shocked.gif
Only did a couple as it was so hot, then went in and he was a star, jumped a lovely round, with just one moment at no. 4 where he had a nap, but jumped it from a standstill and cleared it.

Finished clear

He felt like a different horse jumping as you should be able to see from these photos, definitely loves the hackamore..

Then after a rest in the shade we set off for the XC warm up. He suddenly went a little wild
crazy.gif
Warmed up and had some pretty impressive bucks and leaps, jumped out of his skin but was a little scary
tongue.gif

Decided to give it a go and pull up if I had no control.

Off we set, he shot out of the start box (got the hang of that now
grin.gif
) and over no. 1

Locked onto no 2 from miles away..

Had a look at no.3 (scary log into the dark) but jumped it well, then had some very interesting steering through the woods, and nearly jumped the intro fence on the way out as he locked on and went
crazy.gif
, managed to avoid it (just!) and jumped no. 4, had difficulty getting back round to no. 5 but made it after doing an emergency stop and jumped nicely down the steps. Then on no.6 (looked like a sofa) which he had a look at but jumped nicely. No. 7 was a decent skinny log, and I just couldn't turn, he just locked onto it and there was no stopping him, jumped it on the most ridiculous angle (would never dream of asking a inexperienced baby to jump such a skinny on an angle like that!) but he seemed happy enough! Then thought about pulling up tbh as steering was non existent and brakes were failing a bit too, but he did the double with the ditch so nicely we carried on up the hill, jumped everything after that on an angle as couldn't steer to get him straight
blush.gif
Did the long route into the water with lots of kicking and flew over the scary basket fence...

Then over the last to finish clear!!!! First double clear, and with a not too awful dressage
shocked.gif
Had 8 time faults though as I never truly pushed him XC as would never have been seen again! Plus we had a few wide turns
tongue.gif

So so pleased with him, he jumped like a stag, and really think we have improved some much in the SJing. Obviously need a bit back in for the XC though

Bought this pic of him as just loved his expression...

Well done, thats fantastic news!! I was thinking of you today and wondering if you'd do the long route after my report yesterday! Sounds like the hackamore is suiting Jerry....long may it continue!!! Well done again

Brilliant brilliant brilliant well done!

Sounds like you have a solution for now at least - he is a tricky customer isn't he?

He looks like he has quite a small mouth, maybe that's the bitting issue? The dressage pic is super smart.

Have you had a second opinion on his teeth? Just wondering as I am sure he gets done regularly, but the fussing about a contact jumping does make me wonder if something has been missed at all? I only ask as I now suspect this is the issue with my boy - it's been feeling like the bit was too strong jumping when normally he tows me to a fence, and he's really backing off and been getting worse which is unlike him. Teeth done religiously every 6 months, but today he came in with a swollen right hand side of jaw, which also fits with heaviness on right rein - I'm getting dentist back out to check and he was only done in April by a superb EDT. I think given your steering issues in the hackamore, I'd be inclined to get a second opinion on teeth if you haven't already....sorry, totally unasked for advice there *crawls off back to hole*

I have been thinking the same thing myself tbh, he has them done every 6 months and has never had any problems, but I am really thinking it might be worth getting a second opinion as he is so funny in his mouth.

Not sure what I will try for XC next, not going in a hackamore again, that was downright dangerous

Wooohoooooooooooooo!!! So glad it is all coming into place - you know how much I rate German Hackamores, was the best thing I ever rode Cercs in and the steering WILL come, promise! Lots of wide hands and leg and he will get it...shame you are not a bit heavier to put some decent weight aids in too
wink.gif

My friend evented her 17h in a hackamore and had far more sucess than in an ordinary bit.
Huge well done to you both, what a high and those 2.5 hours home will have flown by
smile.gif

I was spectating there today with a friend and tried to keep an eye out but didn't see you. The course is local to me and have been there many times for the unaff hutner trials, although the step with a ditch in front of it (inthe intro) was in the last two novice (2ft 3in!!) classes I did there! lol! As where the 3 steps down and same water route, made me feel better!
grin.gif

Well done though, it was very very warm!!

I really reckon it is worth doing - I'd personally go for a well-qualified EDT over a vet any day, but that's just personal preference. A good one should be able to tell you exactly which bit will suit his mouth conformation - mine did and told me to steer very clear of high ports. I've had great success with the advice Heather from Neue Schule gave me through her bitting helpline, she would also be well worth a call IMO. There's no pressure to buy from her either, she's really good.

FWIW my boy has not shown any signs on the flat of there being an issue aside from slight heaviness in the right rein, it was the swelling today combined with an incident of quidding which has really flagged it up to me, so I wouldn't discount teeth just coz he's better on the flat.....of course I will now get the dentist who will tell me he is fine, I have no doubt!

Well done to anyone competing in the heat today, i was thinking of you all as was meant to be doing Little Mattingley today. All worthwhile when you hvae a day like that though!!

So pleased you have such good news - you have shown such patience with him. There are bit + hackamore combinations about aren't there?
blush.gif
Good luck for the future - what are your next plans?

oh wow, i have been waiting for a report like this for Jerry, he has always looked like he could do it!! You must be over the moon, hackamore is obviously the way to go!!
