Carol Thatcher in Golliwog Scandal

I don't see the fuss, a word is just a word , it is how it is meant that is offensive. If it is meant with malice then it should not be used , maybe I am old fashioned and remember the toys with love

What a load of rubbish, do you know, I'm so sick of us being told what we can and can't say.
If something is not meant with any malice what's the problem. I don't see anyone banning the use of the phrase 'white trash'? And nor should they.

The worlds gone mad. I also read the other day that it is now not PC to sing 'What shall we do with a drunken Sailor' as it encourages under age drinking. It is now 'Grumpy Sailor'.

Its all laughable really, I think Carol is from the old school and wouldn't really have twigged about what you can and cannot say these days. My mum has a saying ' didn't come off a banana boat' if she thinks you're pulling a fast one and no way would she think it was offensive its just what she grew up hearing.

The worlds gone mad and Britain is becoming ridiculous. Its creating racism when there isn't any.

Madness, they announced it the other night on tv and rolled on a chap to talk about how awful it was, when he appeared my husband and I shouted out loud, because for all the world he looked just like a golliwog...
To people of mine and CT's age, golliwogs were much loved soft dolls, in fact my sister aged 71 and I still argue over who's house he should live in, she's had him for years and I would like a turn..
To us there is no association whatsoever with black people, he is just a doll.
I think some are seeing problems that don't exist here.

Listen to todays Jeremy Whine show re this and roar with laughter at the rent a gob and the lovely Doctor then agree whole heartedly with those who think that the BBC should climb down from up its own @r5e and get in the real world.
I'm off to listen again.

I watched the news ths morning and it had Jay Hunt on it, defending her decision - she just came across as having an axe to grind against CT and this was the perfect way to get her own back. She also said that it was completly differnt to Jonathon Ross, because as soon as he did it he realised he had done wrong and apologised. Now I thought that JR did his phone call and waited quite a while before he broadcasted it.

My mum always used to say 'Play the white man' I gues that is a bit un PC now as well

I think the BBC are sexist!! Jonathan Ross was far more offensive and only got suspended on full pay. Carol got the sack. PC has gone mad. I loved my childhood Gollie I also had a black dollie called Topsie. It didn't mean my parents were racist - far from it.

A world gone mad, and you just know, it will be some dumb ar*e jobs worth who overheard this and decide to tell and hopefully move up the corporate ladder.
Soon we will be giving children not dictionaries but a book of words that are allowed and at this rate the book will not be very thick

To OH and myself and our families, Golliwog is a term of endearment, as they were seen as friendly and fun.
I will continue to use the name in a friendly manner whenever i wish (which is rare, but still...)

I hope it wasn't Jo Brand cos I like her and think she's funny - Having said that she is left wing and is no doubt no fan of C Thatch. Jo will have gone down in my estimation if it was her who made the complaint, especially as it was said in the green room and not on air. Also IMO it's nowhere near as offensive as the Jonothan Ross/Russell Brand scenario, yet Ross wasn't sacked.

Absolutely scandalous. The words were said in private, and the BBC decided to betray that privacy. I’d be incredibly annoyed if friends and colleagues were to go round telling everyone what I’d said in private. Have to agree with you completely Kallie, vulgar buffoons like Jonathan Ross are allowed to personally offend individuals without fear of sacking. Morons.

The rumour mill locally (and I have no idea what started it) is that she was actually talking about Andy Murray's hair reminding her of a golliwog. If this is true, then the comment isn't at all racist in the way it's being portrayed. No more offensive than the next person who might refer to his hair as a bird's nest.

Of course, she may not have been talking about him and the rumour mill is, as usual, inaccurate.

i think it is utter trash to be honest i had a golly when i was a wee lass, they are part of our heritage made as dolls and i believe also to teach children to accept coloured people, next thing bob the builder dolls, barbie dolls, action men will be seen as offensive too, i dont believe she said it in mallis but rather in comparison, i get called haggis by some people and its not said nasty but im sure if said the wrong way could be seen as racist as well!! If they carry on with all this rubbish we will become divided because each race will be too scared to look at, speak or comment on each other for fear of being sued sacked or slated!!

What worries me about this whole business is that CT made her comment in a private conversation with a colleague. It wasn't broadcast, but it was on BBC premises. Truly, Big Brother is alive and well and living in Broadcasting House.

It's ridiculous how we have to be so PC these days it is stifling us.

At school there was a lovely coloured guy who we all called "Sooty". He used it as his name FFS. And a half caste lad was always called "Tinted". They were nicknames, no offense ever meant or taken.

Calling someone a Golliwog, or ni**er - another fondly remembered 'phrase used to describe black people in the 'good old days', is completely unacceptable.

Don't care where she said it or who heard her, she is a BBC reporter, at the cutting edge of public opinion, are we really to believe that she wasn't aware the term would cause offense.

Can't believe people think it's ok tbh...

As others have said its pc gone mad, I heard a at work a few months ago someone was making the teas and coffees and someone asked for black coffee and someone made a complaint about it WTF am afraid in no way is that racist so I continue to ask for black coffee.

LOL my Chemistry teacher at school used to say 'Do you think I came up the Clyde (we are in Scotlnd) in a banana boat' it always made me laugh and I dont't hink anyone took offence (not sure everyone could make the connection)

Personally I think it utter madness, yes the word Golliwog was used as an offensive term but it was also the logo for brand and a toy and you got badges etc (or so my dad tells me) certain words are only racist and other have a double meaning. You can't outlaw all words that happen to have been used in an offensive manner.

It's like saying you can't use the word Donkkey because this one time (at pony clunb camp) a girl said my pony looked like a donkey. Please noone use THAT word, it's so hurtful, I cried that night
