Has anyone else had a horse react really badly to this stuff?

I sprayed it on my girl two weeks ago, and she has had a spectacularly bad reaction to it, her withers are twitching pretty constantly and she isn't keen on having her mane touched (but is better with a firmer touch). The parts that weren't sprayed are ok, as are her brown bits; it's the white furred pink skinned bits that have reacted.

Vet came on Wednesday and prescribed steroids and a bath (with a lengthy rinse). My girl's skin does seem less pink today, but she is still twitching.

The bottle doesn't carry ingredients but does have a very small 'patch test before use' printed sideways, nowhere near the instructions.

I'm pretty angry and worried about my girl, I had no idea this kind of reaction could occur and I'm a bit worried about her being hypersensitive to fly spray etc in future. If anyone has any stories 're allergy recovery I'd like to hear them; I just want her better quickly.

Knew we shouldn't have done dressage. :(

One of mine had a reaction from a fly spray from the vets, where you dilute it yourself. It WAS diluted correctly, but he started to fidget when I was still applying it. When I went back round the other side he had raised wheels, and was distressed. I gave a long cold hose, a mild shampoo and long cold hose again, but his skin was still hot the next day.

He was fine with other sprays, although I did not use one for a week or so, and for a while used citronella one, that was marketed as summer oderant or something!

I thought at first that my girl had nerve damage or something, as she only has one or two very tiny lumps which aren't oozing or anything, yet are hyper hyper sensitive.

Summer oderant! Haha I wouldn't want my girl to smell of anything other than warm horse! Poor girl, I wish I'd bathed her last week, if only it had been more obvious :(

I cant see how you are angry, patch testing is standard and common sense it doesn't mean the product is likely to cause a problem.

On the allergy note, my pony is allergic to some things but not others, he doesn't seem to be more prone to reacting as time has gone on so I wouldn't worry too much (though I know thats easier said than done)

Thanks WD, I am more angry with myself for putting it on her, I just assumed it wouldn't cause any issues. I do think the patch test info should have been in the instructions, but I guess if it's standard to patch test now they wouldn't put it there. Anyway, I will now be reverting to bathing, rinsing a lot, and chalk in future!

Just hoping she recovers quickly, I am very impatient and it's hard watching her all irritated.

The steroids will help

the horse may itch for up to six weeks following an allergic reaction so don't panic if that happens

Yes, a friend's gelding had a reaction to it, his coat went all dandruffy, as did her previous horse.
She just washed them with cold water, and their coats were fine the next day.

I use it all the time for showing and my Arab is really sensitive to fly sprays cant use deet on him but have never had a problem with the dream coat, used radion B on him once and his skin peeled off horible stuff:(

That's really helpful, thanks, I have perhaps 4 weeks to go, I hope I'll be able to get back on board sooner if she keeps improving. I chopped the last 8 inches of mane from her wither off today as that was tickling, hopefully that'll give her skin a break from being touched too. Rugs are off overnight and she only has a fly rug in the day, I didn't want her sweating as that makes it worse, but don't want her to burn. Bloomin' horses!
