Did anyone else see the blood from where the traces rubbed on Boyd Excels horse? Surely he should have been disqualified?

Have just rewatched it it doesn’t seem to be there during his actual round. When is this picture taken? After the classes?

Not that it matters it’s still there but it would make a difference in the rules I’m guessing.

Wider swingle trees would have helped, as well as sheepskin. He switched horses between Friday and Saturday. Not sure if it was this horse swaped out for this reason? In the post win interview on Saturday he said the switch had been to bring in a fresh horse and rest one of his wheelers.

Er yes no doubt in my mind that horse should not have been competing.
However that rub at the top is extremely high for the traces .

The blood rule for driving is more akin to the eventing one.
The horse was swapped out the day after. (Which is within the rules)

Trace rubs are common and we always padded ours .
I bought two horse to drive singly who came out of teams both had scars consistent with trace rubs .

I do find it very odd if nobody official at the event has picked this up? I’ve seen quite a few comments about it on FB. To be fair I didn’t watch it myself but seems many people noticed and I can’t see how officials wouldn’t either. Boyd’s Instagram account mentions switching horse but not anything about why (unsurprisingly). His profile says “champion of champions”, I hope this horse gets treated like a champion in future.

The FEI vets and stewards were aware. There’s a pre event trot up where general health is also noted (again like eventing) and you’re pretty much hounded with the horses being checked as you finish. The swingle tree width is also checked if there’s any concerns (for multiples). As well as the stewards and judges in the arena. The show made a comment on their Facebook yesterday during the day but maybe it was deleted now.

He said he swapped horses as the horse that was swapped out had done a few competitions recently and needed a rest.

We are aware that Boyds horses have rubs from the traces on the wheelers hind quarters. The skin is not broken but the hair has been rubbed. Both the FEI officials and the FEI vet were made aware immediately and checked the horses prior to their continuing. The area was treated with an approved spray that will stop further rubbing. The horses will continue to be monitored by the FEI vets. The health and welfare of the horses always comes first in competition.

As an aside, I always wanted to do the s***land pony grand national, but it seems to be very much who you know to get a chance to do it? Of course I'm now far too old and fat to do it ?

I know someone who's daughter did it, they used to go round all the shows that had qualifiers to try and qualify. It was hard work but she made it to Olympia several times.

Can't understand how such an experienced driver could let this happen?
The swingle trees look much too narrow and the traces are restricting the natural action of the wheelers.
Have driven for many years and my traces never touched the hind legs.
I dont like these new courses they seem far too taxing on the horses, they really look tired and blowing hard.

Traces were designed for pulling, I worked with driving horses for years, teams pairs etc (including the original form of FEI driving trials) and never saw trace rubs even on clipped horses. I think the tight turns and 360 degree cirles are very unnatural - where on earth would a road coach or delivery vehicle need to be continually be twisting and turning?

The swingle trees are standard width. Traces are going to be touching the hindlegs when you are doing those turns. I think they’ve do have them pretty close coupled as it reduces the overall ‘train length’.
