I have always wanted to learn to do this - but have never met anyone who did (despite working in the industry for about 20 plus years).
Any idea what the best way in getting started may be?
S :D

have a google of whos in your area, years ago I worked for a chap called mark broadbent, after one accident not related to him and an accident with him I gave it up. ive driven a couple of friends ponies but its not something i fell a need to do these days.

I taught myself to drive, although i don't recommend the way i did it. :D
OH decided that it would be a good idea to do wagon rides for the tourists , i had never driven a horse before, we brought our shire, he did up an old wagon, and off we went. We eventually bought a smaller wagonette, and did the rides for about ten years.

Were abouts do you live? there are a few places that you can have mini breaks at, that do carriage driving lessons, a friend went to one in Devon that was good, if you are interested i will get the address for you, in a few days.

It's great fun - if a bit scary when you first get started.

I groomed for a pony pairs competitor for a few seasons in national horse driving trials - which I loved.

Have a look out for your local driving club (British Horse Driving Trials Association has a links page which lists contact details for the majority of the regional clubs) - get in touch with them and pop along to one of your local events (always very happy to meet new folks - especially if you are happy to steward at the odd event) - and then they can introduce you to local instructors - and often the opportunity to backstep for the marathon too.

I've had lessons with Mark Broadbent and Boyd Excel, both very good about six years ago. My sister in law taught me the basic and I went from there. I have taught friends to drive..... up to Horse Driving Trials with my school master of a pony, I have broken and schooled a few now. - however. Not for the faith hearted! lol
