So, the search for a supplement carrier is back on...

The horses have gone on summer turnout, which means out overnight (5pm-8am). They are fed in the evening about 4pm, and are turned out before I can get to the yard after work.

Normally I put their supplement in a scoop of rinsed sugarbeet (as I can't get unmollassed), but I can't leave it overnight for breakfast when they come in as it starts to ferment due to the heat and there are millions of flies about.

Unmollassed chaff is not available here (and I think that overnight it would settle with the powder falling straight through).

Would it be so bad to put their supplement in a handful of mollassed lucerne chaff (two things I would normally avoid for my barefoot guys)?

The other possible option would be to get something from Baileys, tag it onto the yard order and pay the YM separately.

Any ideas please?

TIA :)

Hi Ester, daytime temps are about 30C, and as I have 24hour soak sugarbeet pellets I think it is the soaking water which makes it "go off"

But thanks for the Baileys light chaff lead. That looks great... now all I have to do is ask the YM if I can get a couple of bags on the yard order and pay her for them. I'd me much happier feeding the chaff than I would the sugarbeet actually!

Gah!

Looks like only the Alfalfa Blend and Golden Chaff are available *head desk* why is it soooo difficult to get molasses free here *sigh*

I've emailed Baileys to see if I can get some posted to me... (that'll be 9 quid for the chaff and 25 for the postage!)

Would grass or alfalfa pellets go off over night if you put very cold or iced water in them to start with they make brilliant carriers. The other option would be to freeze your sugarbeet and only take it out to defrost overnight it would then still be fresh in the morning
You could even leave it in an insulated cool box with the ice maker things

Unfortunately I can't get any low energy grass nuts (actually grass nuts are very difficult to source full stop)

I need to leave it in the feed bowl over night as I don't go to the yard on a morning and my YM doesn't do additional supplements.

If you froze it though you could just leave it in the bowl by the time it had defrosted it would be well mixed up and would stay cool a lot longer

Or just soak the sugarbeet in a cooler box with ice packs and leave it in that for the morning? Surely the YO wouldn't mind getting a bucket out a cooler for them?

Just keep two frozen ice packs to throw in to the bucket?
Btw are you sure its 24 hours to soak, I used to do nuts in 6 hours, you can easily tell if they are not 100% soaked.

It doesn't matter if they are 1 hour, 6 hour or 12 hour soak pellets really. I'm only at the yard once per day, so anything which is wet will have to sit in the manger overnight which isn't ideal (especially with the number of flies we have).

I think I'll just try them on the mollassed chaff. TBH the small amount they will get (half a scoop) I don't think is going to make much difference... and if it does I'll have to have a re-think.

Thanks for all of your ideas :)

Prepare and store your Sugarbeet in a chilly bin/cooler/esky. Stops it going off.

Could you not just place the supplement in a plastic cup on top of the feed then all that has to be done is to tip the supplement into the feed and stir.
