Apples are ok, but really limit the carrots you give. Because they are the storage organ for the plant they are full of sugars that you dont want a laminitic to have. My vet said no more than 1 a day when my horse was recovering from a bout.
Thanks for the replies. Perhaps I'll just give her one sliced apple and one sliced carrot in each feed then. She is also suffering from Gastric Ulcers so need to make her feeds as appetising as possible, not easy at all!!!!
Don't suppose anyone knows if Likits are safe? My guess is that they are probably not but thought I would check as she does adore them.
They are just sugar so steer well clear!!! Be carefull about feeding too many turnips and swedes aswell as boredom busters, as these have the same issue as carrots
They are not quite as exciting as carrots and apples but have you tried giving her stalks from brocolli? The bit thats left when you have taken all the florets off? And leaves from cauliflowers and cabbages? If she doesnt like them then the occasional grape wouldnt hurt!!!
I haven't tried in the past but certainly will give them a go when she comes home (she's still in horsepital at the moment and the staff might think I've gone mad if I turn up armed with brocolli, cauliflower, cabbages and grapes)!
I may have missed the update but how is your horse???? apart from the Carrot and Apple worry?
My Vet now tells me no Carrots and Apples for my Cushings Horse .... but 2 years ago she said he could have carrots .... but now it's a no no .... but she also said apples are not so bad .... my old boy actively looks and waits for the Carrots at least, so I still give him a small amount each day .... however he is now 'under control' and I know where I am with him.
Your horse is suspected EMS isn't she?? so I am sure they will both be a no no, and at her stage in the stablising time, I would have thought it better to avoid them ... I KNOW it is upsetting (as I have been in your shoes with my boy, to a certain extent) but may be the best for now at least
I haven't posted an update recently so you haven't missed it, but I'll do one here quickly. Bloods all came back normal so EMS has been ruled out. X-rays still normal too. Lameness, digital pulses and heat has improved on all feet apart from right fore which she is still quite lame on, but vet thinks this may be a completely seperate issue.
The vet is still not 100% convinced that she is suffering from laminitis, but as we do not know what else it could be it has been agreed to treat her as if it is lami.
Sadly the ulcers are back despite being on her second week of Gastrogard and last Friday she developed ringworm too which is just great!
Hopefully she will be allowed to come home at the end of the week but she will not be on anymore box rest. As Lottie has so may other issues, especially the ulcers, and just does not cope with box rest, the vet and I feel that it is not viable to keep her in so she will be turned out during the day (our grazing is pretty poor) and stabled at night. Am hoping this will work for her, if not, we will have to seriously think again.
Really looking forward to getting her home (she will have been at horsepital for 2 weeks), but on the other hand I am scared to death incase she gets so ill again.
Hi Stasha22
Thank you so much for the update .. let us all know when you get her home and her progress, and well done for being there for her, you obviously love her to bits
Hi when our horse had laminitis and was in the large animal hosptal i asked the vet there if i could give her carrots and apples and she said no but it was okay to give her celery... she never liked it at first but after a while she used to take a small bit now and then. Really hope your horse makes a full recovery.. Our mare did and shes fine now..
A friend who has a rescued pony who went down with severe laminitis has been advised that carrots are fine for laminitics, (not too many though)after all, they do have a high water content. I have asked her where she found the info. Will let you know when she gets back to me.
