Carrots heating horses up? Anyone?

My friend has a TB ex racer who was very hot headed. Friends instructor asked her if she fed carrots (which she did,7 or 8 a day) she suggested she stop and see what happened and he significantly did calm down. So I would say yes they can x

I don't know how accurate but heard carrots are quite high sugar, I was feeding my high energy yearling a couple of carrots twice a day but stopped a few months ago, she is much calmer but that could just be a coincidence. I now give a few cuts of swede every now again but that's it no 'treats'.

The Current Appy cannot tolerate carrots at all! I think it is a combination of the sugars and the phyto-oestrogens. Also our elderly dog can't cope with them and we think it is something to do with phenols, but can't be sure. The Current Appy can't have alfalfa either.

If you feed ben the horse i share a one inch long bit of carrot i can tell within seconds of getting on him. I seems crazy the reaction he has to carrots, nothing else just carrots.

I wont let carrots near my horses. I have seen many many examples of horses behaving badly on carrots.
I also heard you dont feed carrots to autistic children....?

Carrots are 8% sugar. Which isn't that high. Polos are over95%

I don't feed polos to horses either, feeding them sweets is one of my pet hates. :-))
There is a reason why it's recommended that we don't feed carrots to horses that are susceptible to lammi.
I accidentally cooked some sliced carrots without the water once (!), they caramelised.

I have never noticed any difference with H if I give him his carrots or not. I always take him about 4 or 5 mega ones (cut up), but sometimes have run out (or forgot!) and he seems just the same. That isn't every day, though (I only ride weekends and school holidays) He will do nice tricks for a bit of carrot, as well! :D

It is the only treat he gets, mixed in to his dinner. (although I did find a polo in my coat pocket yesterday - who knows how long it had been there!! - so he did have that! Sorry!)

My first horse got really vicious if he had a lot of carrots (I had a whole bag of pony carrots to use up so went a bit overboard one summer), so yes some can go a bit bonkers, but he was ok on just a few.

My current horse is fine stuffing his face with them. I think it depends on the horse. He stands at the back of the box sulking if you don't show up with atleast something! He also has a habit of standing next to you waving his front leg in the air (bad idea to play around with a 'clicker') on the off chance you might have something in your pocket..

Yes, my girl goes loopy on carrots. I now think it is linked to her insulin resistance that she has now developed. Obviously, carrots are not on the menu for her any more. But when she was young, if she had more than a couple of carrots she was wacky. She could eat any amount of oats no problem, but carrots, no way.
