Carrying a crop .

I carry a whip whenever I ride but mainly for me to get used to riding and holding one. I never use it on the pony I ride but was always told to take one out with me when hacking just in case.
 
No but after my incident with the inconsiderate man in the van I think I shall start carrying one to stick out when cars get too close & fast!! Oh and for any dogs which seem to be running for a feast on my horses legs...
 
Always out hacking and jumping. Hacking because if you need to get your horse to shift NOW and it's having a dither it can be a useful reminder. I don't mind if it results in a leap forwards, because that's often enough to get out the way.

For jumping, it's for my benefit really. The horses I ride are well schooled and know their job, so if they start being silly it's just them being silly and a quick tap and a growl reminds them that what they're doing isn't appropriate.
 
I have a schooling whip for hacking as Meg has a tendency to spin and that whip just being there tends to remind her to have manners! It's also good for sticking out into the road to remind drivers that I need personal space!

I also have a short whip for jumping, again, don't tend to use it but it's better to have one then struggle without.
 
Always carry one. In the school it is used VERY rarely and usually only a tickle to wake him up and sometimes placed on a shoulder to keep him in or out a bit!

Would feel rather lost out hacking without one - moving branches out of the way, beating off mad dogs, flicking off flies etc etc and the backup if we HAVE to move.

Yes I was confused, I used to carry a vintage hunting crop to help with opening of gates, and to get spooky chap used to things happening around him, I have sold it now [£130].
I have to carry a schooling whip with my current horse, but otherwise I rarely ever carried one for years, it is helpful as an aid for a young horse, but a schooling whip is better.
I detest the practice of allowing children to carry a whip, as it teaches them to hit horses.

I have a Hi-Viz green schooling whip that I usually carry out hacking, useful for sticking out into the traffic :) I haven't been carrying it for a month or two as I have done something funny to my elbow and it hurts to carry my stick. However after the mare planted twice today, I shall have to carry it again, bad elbow or no bad elbow!

My personal view is - anybody who hacks out without a stick is nuts, I also don't go with the comment - the horse won't carry a stick, it will if you train it and only ever use a stick appropriately.

Never, creature not happy with them and doesn't need one, although I'm considering it for tomorrow on a longer than usual hack, mostly because I'm nervous!

I used to carry a dressage whip to indicate to cars how far to be from my nervy TB loan on narrow lanes. Shame they ignored that!
