My ex-racer carries his tail quite high when ridden. Someone told me this is a sign of back pain or weakness. Is that right? He doesnt hold it to either side just higher.

Photo?

As in arab high? (But they are all different before anyone mentions that)
Has he always done this or is it a new thing?
All the time or just sometimes, at all paces?
Only when ridden or loose too?

Sorry for the questions, but it could just be his way of going unless this is a recent thing. Some Tb's do carry their tails more than others.

If a horse carries the tail to the side, then yes, I would look for a reason for that.

My tb has a high tail carriage when he is feeling fresh! When he has a mad moment in the field its up right like an arab!! He is perfectly sound so i wouldnt worry

My highland x has an unusually high tail carriage for a highland. He is very expressive with his tail. The physio said his back was perfectly fine.

As long as its not something new or holding it to the side. He should be OK and nothing to worry about.

Some horses have more expressive tails than others I have found. If you are concerned though, ask your vet to have a look at him.
