I've noticed recently that it seems to be male dogs that carry sticks/pine cones/ random objects when we are out on our walks. My girls will pick something up, drop it again a few yards on but the dogs will hunt something out and carry it happily for hours, even going back for it if they put it down for a sniff. Can anyone shed light onto why that is or is it just my pack of hounds - who incidentally don't really get introduced to chasing sticks etc as they are 'hard working dogs' - honest guv!

Windsor used to obsessively carry items, usually empty bottles if I didn't bring a dummy with me. Tina will carry dummies, but nothing else and Midget isn't too bothered!

Henry chews up sticks and eats them sometimes **facepalms**

ETA if they are huge sticks that he can knock people over with he is of course a very enthusiastic carrier **facepalms again**

Hmm, both of mine have too short an attention span for that!

I notice at training though, the females do seem to drop the objects once they have 'won' them more quickly, instead of strutting around with chest puffed out and tail flying!
(I've heard the exclamation 'pick it back up, you dozy cow!' more than once...)

Spitting the dummy is still a bad habit of Henry's although he knows he is not going to get anything for doing it so as soon as he drops it he picks it back up, drops it, picks it back up...

It's not that he spits it out totally, he just lets go as soon as my hand touches it and so it will hit the floor sometimes!

My three are all girls.Beau--Lab (Gundog instincts) Jess--collie x Skye--collie x.
Jess and Beau will carry a ball, stick or plastic bottle for most of the walk. If I don't take a ball, Beau and Jess will seek something to carry.Skye, however will drop things after a short distance.
Does this throw the theory into mayhem?
Sorry.

Herman will carry a stick/frisbee/toy for as long as he wants to play for and no longer  If he gets bored during a game, he tends to chase really hard, like he's loving the game, jump on it and then look at me as if to say 'it's here, come get it, you lazy arse' then trundle off in the opposite direction. Without the toy. We lost a (borrowed) frisbee this morning, thanks to that caper. *bangshead*

My dog loves sticks, bottles, frisbees andything he will chase, carry aound all his toys.

My bitch on the other hand will chase my dog when hes cahsing a stick but won't go after one herself, also not that bothered with toys (unless edible!)

she looks at me as if to say 'go get it yourself you lazy b***h'!!
