How are everyones 4x4 in the snow? Who's are crap and who's are great? I hav'nt driven since Tuesday as i cant get my 206 out. So i'm thinking of getting a 4x4. Need some help. Thanx
front wheel drives aren't bad at all, took my mini out yesterday and it behaved perfectly.
rear wheel drives are the work of the devil on snow and ice though, front wd or 4 wd is hugely preferable!
yes have to agree, stay clear of rear wheel drives and if you have 1 keep it parked in the drive, saw some posh git on the news a day or 2 back in his brand new Porsche trying to get into the office, just making a right mess of it!!!
4x4 all the way!!!!
My MG TF is rear wheel drive, Iam petrified of skidding (ive wriiten 2 cars off in ice, and they were front wheel drive)
On Friday I finished a house sitting job that was in middle of now where, all week I had been looking at the snow on said drive and the big drift behind my car plus drive went up an incline to get on road, I shovel myself out managed the incline, with a bit of wheel spinning, I thought my heavy suitcase might hold back end down!!
Until I got to the main roads, the roads were horrific, so I drove ar 5mph!! And had a 2 mile tail back, of proberbly pissed off people behind me!! Once I got down our drive at home I did a back end side ways skid into my parking space, Iam not going out in it till I have to get to my next sit, hope snow will of gone by then.
My X trail has been fab, not let me down yet! We've made it up steep hills/quiet country lanes etc with no problem, and it's been fab around the yard where many other cars have failed.
I have a little tiny skada felicia (i don't need to tow anything!) and i have had no probs at all going over ice, snow, unmade roads, steep hills etc. drove past a 4x4 stuck in icy sludge on thursday.
Super Car!!!
Thinking about it, its not the cars who have to cope with the snow/ice, its the people driving them
The car is just doing what you tell it, too much gas and you wheel spin, driving too fast and put brakes on and skid, not down to car, down to driver error and not nowing how to drive it snow!
James, i agree with you 100% and am sick of watching people who dont know what they are doing. But.....
My car is rubbish in the snow! Its a little honda, i thourght it was me being rubbish until i drove my oh car, his is a focus and and was so easy compared to mine.
Iv not been out in mine all week and yesterday i got a very good snow driver to put mine on the drive for me as im a wimp, his car is a rear wheel drive and he was very shocked how bad mine was in the snow.
My little astra has been fab. It has got me to the yard everyday and even down the farm track without any problems. I have been tempted to buy a 4x4 though.
We've been flying everywhere with our Range Rover - nothing stops us! Having said that, my OH has spent decades in the Highlands and he really knows how to drive on/through snow.
Thing that's annoying me is that we have another RR we were planning to get MOTd and sell - and he hasn't got around to MOTing it and it's just sitting on the drive when so many people could be buying it and using it in this weather!
The MOT only ran out the week before christmas and he kept saying he'd get it done...... by the time he gets it done, it'll be warm and sunny weather and no one will want i!! Men!!!
My rear wheel drive S320 has not been _too_ bad. I have had winter (snow) tyres fitted and have been proceeding about slowly but steadily. It has so many electronic safety, stability and goodness knows what else systems I'd be hard pushed to get it into a position that might cause it to skid, because it beeps and pings at me so much!
My Maverick LWB hasn't put a foot wrong, been using it to ferry people to their stables and shopping etc
Have another Jeep I have just sold (Mahindra CJ540 Chief) can't fault that either in the snow, coped with 15" of it last year and was delivering meals on wheels on it!
Other vehicle in household is my mum's VW camper (T4) 2.5 diesel automatic, won't even get out of front garden in that, useless in the snow!
My motorbike is not an option in the snow either!
My Honda Civic has been brilliant - I have to drive over compacted snow/ice to get to my girl and I've been really pleased with how this car has coped with it.
My OH has a Suzuki Grand Vitara which is what i use for towing the trailer, and I've been up to the farm in that for the past two days as it was in front of my car. It has 4wd obviously, which makes a difference, but tbh I haven't used it even when driving over the snow, and that's been great too.
OH's CRV doing well, getting to calls up interesting lanes without any hedge encounters.
We decided that my RWD MR2 had to be started today, and OH got it down the drive and back, thanks to limited slip diff and mid engine putting weight over then drive wheels. Next time I drive it, I will be driving like I've got an egg on the throttle pedal, as you can get the tail out on a damp road if you're a bit enthusiastic...
