Although perhaps 'successor' would be more polite than 'replacement'. Carthorse has moved to Shropshire to spend many happy winters hunting and summers living the Life of Riley. He emailed me last week and asked me to let you all know that he's settled in well, is enjoying grazing with his new friends all day every day and his new owner has never even heard of dressage!

I thought I'd buy a nice 5/6yo doing well at PN and ready to move up to Nov by the end of the season, until I saw the price tag that comes with that sort of horse (£18,000 anyone?
crazy.gif
confused.gif
) and lowered my expectations accordingly. Yup, I'll be starting with a 4yo yet again.

I looked at quite a few but the one that ticked all the boxes turned up today. He's 16.3 (and the rest
crazy.gif
), 4yo by Mill Law and out of a mare that was on Irish Junior teams. I don't know her breeding yet but will find out when the passport arrives (long story
crazy.gif
....). When I went to try him I jumped him round a 1m course with paddling pools under the first fence, water trays, fillers, skinny etc. He was being ridden at home by the owner's daughter who is 13 and seemed very well-behaved
wink.gif
.

I've hopped on him today and he was fab, not at all worried by the new surroundings. He also got his first set of back shoes on which he was slightly less fab about
mad.gif
. There will be a LOT of practice in that department before the farrier comes again
mad.gif
(I slipped the farrier a tenner extra and told him to get himself a beer on the way home
wink.gif
).

Right, so now you're picturing some shining beacon of equine excellence I'd better shatter your illusions..... I'VE JUST BOUGHT THE UGLIEST HORSE EVER!!!

Not for nothing is he called 'Fuggles' (Fugly to his friends). He's all leg, with a pot belly, no rump or neck and is quite possibly the least attractive horse I've ever owned. Please, someone tell me that this ugly duckling will turn into a swan???
crazy.gif

'Tea-time, did anyone mention tea-time?'
Fuggles005.jpg

'No, I won't stop grazing for you to take my photo, not even for a second
wink.gif
'

Looking very stressed about his new home:

Fuggles004.jpg

That was quick
smile.gif
at least he has got big white socks just like carthorse
smile.gif
i will still see you miles away. It dont matter what he looks like as long as he does his job and you have fun. xx

He's not ugly, he's cute! Our most successful pony was also the ugliest we've ever owned...

Handsome is as handsome does!

He aint that bad!! lol! In fact I quite like!

Good luck on the swan transformation! You will soon wonder what you were ever worried about.

Nooo he's not fugly. Don't be mean, he'll hear you..... He just has a big white face. Which together with the white socks means that he is itching to be a dressage ponce one day (just so long as he can go jumping after, that is
laugh.gif
)

shocked.gif
Its Carthorse himself?!!

Is this horse not identical to your old one?!
tongue.gif

Seriously, I really like him, he looks like a proper old fashioned 4 star event type... LOVE that head!! Very King William!

He's not ugly at all - well not to me anyway. Actually quite like him!!! You should know I have a thing for bays with white faces & legs
blush.gif

Best of luck with him and he'll deffo fill out in the right places - shall look forward to the follow ups
grin.gif

I think he's lovely - I really like white on a face.

My dad's moto is thus:

With a paint job you go one of two ways...
totally amazing or truly awful - either way people will remember you
wink.gif

Good luck I hope you have lots of fun!

I had heard a whisper on the grapevine that there may be a new addition to the Gamebird family soon......
wink.gif

Fwiw I don't think he's Fugly at all
mad.gif
. However, if it sets your mind at rest I know a rather good young showjumper who was bought a 4yo by one of her owners. As soon as she set foot on the yard, the mare was named F.U.B (I'll leave you to work out what the initials stand for
blush.gif
). 2 years on she is THE most stunning (and useful may I add) mare you will ever set your eyes on.

There is hope!
laugh.gif

Good luck with him, hope he turns out to be a worthy replacement for Carthorse.

Hear hear. I used to work at a riding school and we where given the uglyest horse i have ever seen. nothing matched we said he had been made up of all the left over bits. But when we started jumping him we descovered he was fantastic we called him handsom is but at one show the comentator refused to call him it she called him fishface. (irony was obviously lost on them) but we sold him as a show jumper in the end and he did bsja with local sucess. Your horse looks lovely though I wish you every sucess with him.

dingle12 - I am consoling myself with the thought that at least we ought to be able to spot ourselves in photos. I started with a dun mare who was easy to spot, had Carthorse last, again easy, and anything plain brown I've resorted to a sheepskin noseband just so that I could find the pics more easily
blush.gif

O_B - fwiw he's got one more white leg than Carthorse and is considerably lighter built (7/8ths-ish TB), though the photos make him look a bit chunky

teapot - am spending a lot of time trying to forget that saying about white legs 'one white leg: buy it, two white legs: try it....' etc
crazy.gif

eventerlad15 - winter BSJAing (I am SOOOO going to have a horse that SJs this time
mad.gif
) and some baby hunter trials this autumn then BYEH and PN next year. I have challenged Baydale to a 'Clash of the Giants' at Bramham BYEH 2010, though we'll have to have filled out a bit more by then
crazy.gif
. Then, obviously, Badders 2014

I think he looks proper 'andsome and will improve under your guidance I have no doubt. I like 7/8ths TB, perfect. Hope he turns out to be everything you want him to be. What's his name really? Fugly is just silly and probably not at all politically correct
grin.gif

Bu99er me, you kept that quiet!!!
shocked.gif

I don't think he's ugly, poor boy, you'll give him a complex
smirk.gif
I do reckon, once you've worked your magic, that he WILL turn in to a swan
cool.gif

Lovely to hear that carthorsehas found a lovely home too
smile.gif

Best of luck with Fuggles then
wink.gif

"I'm not posting any pictures of him until he looks like a horse"
wink.gif
That lasted a long time then
tongue.gif
wink.gif
haha!! He has a lovely head actually (something I couldnt see in the pics) and is very similar to CH actually
grin.gif
He is definitely a your stamp of horse though, and will look fab very quickly I reckon
grin.gif

I think with a bit of time and muscle he will look quite smart.

he's mega loooks really handsome not fugly at all (well maybe just a little) but 'the ugly ones are the honest ones' that's my mantra but you are welcome to adopt it
smile.gif

If he's called Fuggles what will his comp name be?...

Chloe - it's all in the dark a bit as he may already have been named. I won't know until the passport arrives (original has been lost so Weatherbys are sending a duplicate). The world of eventing has plenty enough bad puns on 'Mill' though...

KatB - OK, so I'm weak. Can I add (rather plaintively) 'he looks better under saddle, really he does
wink.gif
'

ps. KatB - you won't be surprised to hear that I felt unable to ride for reasons of vanity until I'd pulled his mane and tail and chopped 9 inches off the bottom of his tail
wink.gif
tongue.gif
. He did come from a SJing yard after all.....

hahahahahaha!!! I know, I had pulled L's tail within 12hours of her being on the yard too...
wink.gif
Long manes and tails is just SO common dahrling
