Hi,

My 17yo mare has hock spavin, she has probably had it for over 2 years, she had a steriod injection a year ago which seemed to help for a while maybe. Got xrays again last week but no results yet. Just wondering which treatment to try this time? Vet keeps mentioning tildren but does that mean that the arthritis is at an advanced stage i.e is got through all the cartiledge and down to the bone? so the cartiledge protectors like Adequan and Cartrophen are not any use? She is 1 to 2/10 lame . I am still hacking out and on 1 bute she seems almost sound. Can I expect any of these treatments to make her 100% sound? and for how long?

Thanks for reading.

I think at this stage, Tildren is your best bet tbh. If its been going on for two years, chances are that she is pretty much beyond Adequan or Cartrophen.

Have you asked about surgical fusion? If it hasn't fused that might be a way to go.

Thanks. Vet did mention surgery but wasn't pushing it that much. She is not insured any more, well not for arthritis and not sure I would want her to have an op. Its probably Tildren or bute and work then really.

Tildren, I have been told by my vet, is more useful at the start of changes, rather than when they are established.

That said, it has helped Merlin immensly
