No horses for the foreseeable future and work is grim. Was going on a Mary Wanless course in June but that will be off. Been going to bed very early as knackered, slight non-covid lurgi, and a bit depressed. Home gym routine hasn't happened this week. So l've taken a mad notion....l've always wanted to be able to do cartwheels. l couldn't get anywhere near as a very unathletic child and l'm 57 shortly, but if l work on upper body strength and lose a stone i think i have a project ... and now l've posted l'll have to get going :- ))

Will be doing lots of planks and have some dumbbells. Tips welcome!

PS I will of course be tackling this sensibly and not risking injury ;-)

This made my day! And for a brief moment I wondered if I could also try, but sadly I think I am at least 20 years too late!

I’ve been trying to think of something new to achieve whilst confined to home for the next 12 weeks - cartwheels had not crossed my mind ? I was thinking more along the lines of learning a language or creating something in the house or garden. But now you’ve really got me thinking......

I used to be very good at them, but I am fairly sure that if I tried now, my arms would let me down, and i would land on my face. I could give it a go in the arena, once it's nice and dark, so no-one can see me!

l don't want to encourage any foolishness amongst other older members, l'm bad enough :)

Too late, I'm 60 and going to give it a go.

How I imagine it will be

Also nice and soft, but remember to poo pick :-)

I could always do cartwheels and handstands. I couldnt do a headstand though. I cheated one day and got someone to hold my legs up for me, quickly went all funny and passed out. I gave up gymnastics after that!

Good idea Teajack - good luck!

I cant do them. But I'll have a go too, I think pike push ups are a good way to build the right strength

Gosh, they look brutal o_O
I can cartwheel 'til the cows come home (feeling smug; this is not a talent I ever thought I would get to be proud of :D) but I'm pretty sure any attempt at a pike pushup would result in a broken nose. I can't even do regular push ups, only ones on my knees, and only then about 5 (probably more like 3). Maybe that could be my project... Five normal push ups, or one pike push up!

I have found my fellow ‘none cartwheel able’ people!

I have tried but I just cannot seem to do them ☹️, aged 30 and a half...

Are you tall with long limbs? I am 5ft 4ins and used to be able to do them when I younger (wouldn’t dream of trying now) and so can my daughter who is similar in stature. My other daughter who is 5ft 10ins with long willowy limbs (looks like a model - we hate her) has never ever been able to do a cartwheel without landing on her face.

Id start with handstands against a wall to build the necessary shoulder stabilisation and strength necessary. There are lots of tips out there on how to build up to handstands if you aren’t ready for those yet. But I love a goal like that! Right before I got sick I was working on headstand pressing up into freestanding handstand, I was super proud of myself!

I cant and I'm short and distinctly pear shaped :p

Lol funnily enough today I was practising headstands and cartwheels. I've always been able to do them* and have also done some wall handstand recently. Might add that to the lockdown list.

*I cannot comment on the quality of said movements

Nope short and squat ??. I’m 5’2 with short legs, mum who is a similar height but longer legged can do them though...

I have never been able to do cartwheels. I suspect it may be something to do with not having very flexible joints. I couldn't touch my toes either, about half way down my calves at best. After doing lots of bending clearing droppings by hand with rubber gloves on I discovered I had stretched my back enough to just about touch my toes. I couldn't develop the technique needed for hurdling either though, suspect it is all connected. I am (was) 5' 2" with long legs and a short upper body.
