Casper and I attempted our third ever XC this weekend at Craigie.

Entered the Adult Minimus class (approx 2ft) but they accidently put us in the Junior class but were kind enough to let us keep our time and just put our results in with the senior class (neither of us could pass as juniors unfortunately!)

It was running about 45 minutes late so we were hanging about a bit. Started warming up just as the last riders from the prior class were starting but unfortunately the last rider had a fall and broke her collar bone so another significant delay waiting for an ambulance etc.

Finally started at about half 4 ish – we were supposed to be on at 2:55pm.

Casper was more fizzy than usual which I put down to this being the first time he has travelled to a competition with another horse so he was very shouty in the warm up – happy to leave his friend but very fast and generally shouting his head off at his friend or any horse that remotely resembled his friend. By the time we were called to go though he'd settled down and I was worried all the hanging about might have sent him to sleep!

We set off and he jumped the first two well enough – I’m learning that he is always a bit sticky when he starts jumping. He takes a few jumps to get his confidence up and find his stride.

At jump 3 he stopped but I didn’t turn him away – he was made to jump it from a standstill – he cat leapt it, I nearly fell off and I lost my stirrup but recovered quickly and he jumped the next two nicely! :)

Got to the next jump and there was a bit of a traffic jam – the two riders in front of me weren’t going very forward. One was my friend and the other a junior who just couldn’t get her horse to jump and was constantly getting in my friends way despite the stewards shouting at her to move over and let her pass. I was going pretty fast and just shouted at them to move and Casper passed them but stopped at the jump which I suspect was due to him being distracted by the other two horses. Turned and popped it nicely second time around and then jumped the next few beautifully!

Next came the water – it was a simple trot in and out with no step but he’s never done water before and stopped to have a look! At that moment the little junior came up behind and overtook (no call to let us know she was there!) Luckily, Casper took his cue from that horse and cantered through the water! I then pulled him up a little as I didn’t want to be on her tail for the rest of the course so we walked over the gravel road and then galloped the rest of the course including an over height box filled with scary white bags :D

He flew to the finish line – I’ve never felt him go like that before – he’s been a bit unsure at our last two cross countries but I think he might have finally got the idea!

Anyway, it was ages before the adult class was running and there were 24 in the class so we loaded the lorry and headed home because we had a long journey! Got a text from my friend later on to say we’d left something behind – our 6th place rosette!!!! :D

I am over the moon with that – jumping has never been our strong point but I’ve persevered with him because he seems to enjoy it and I’ve always said that’s the main thing! To actually get a rosette in such a big class is the icing on the cake! Just shows what a little bit of time and patience can do!

I don’t have any piccies of us on the course (pro one’s aren’t up yet) but I’ll post some warm up ones later!

Got another XC next weekend so I’m hoping his form continues :D

Whoop whoop, well done you and Casper! :D How annoying about the hold ups but glad you had a good run (eventually!).

Huge well done on being placed. :) Are you thinking of doing Gleneagles next month? Still have time to enter Dalkeith in two weeks time if you haven't already...! ;)

PS- did you attempt to/get to use your schooling whip?

I've already entered the 2ft class at Dalkeith and District.

Gleneagles starts at 2'6 and we're not ready for that yet - aiming to do the 2'6 at Craigie in the spring as it is a little under height there.

Didn't bother with the dressage whip and I didn't need it - he was very forward :D

Well done casper! :)

You should consider gleneagles - its a pretty small and straight forward 2'6ft and flat as a pancake so makes it easier! Aso lots of L fences in the 2'6ft (I think almost one for every fence!).

Glad he was good and forwards and so you didn't need to worry about whip. :) Good luck at Dalkeith if we don't see you on the day- we'll be at the opposite end of the day from you so you'll probably be done and dusted and chilling on the sofa while we're pitching up and getting ready!

Ems- do you have course pics to convince Babybear with?! :)

Nooooo Gleneagles is big, proper, posh XC - we'd embarass ourselves and bring shame on the forum!! :D

Oh and a little moan about yesterday - they made me remove his bandages because they weren't taped on - never had to tape them and they've never come loose and didn't have tape with me and he had to do the whole course without (although I think that may be why he jumped so well lol!)

FJ- are the big classes at Dalkeith not on first? I was hoping for another lazy afternoon outing!

Ha ha, no you wouldn't! You would zoom round, have a ball and wonder what the fuss was about entering in the first place! ;)

RE: bandages- personally, I prefer boots. But if I was using bandages XC, I would definitely tape them on, so I can see where they were coming from I'm afraid. :( Does Craigie not normally have a wee tradestand tack shop on site that could have sold you boot tape? If not, it's always worth smiling and asking a neighbour nicely if they have any, I have shared random things like stud taps (even studs to a friendly Nic-shaped person! ;) ), cotton wook, bandage tape etc at events before.

And for Dalkeith, I'm guessing it will run in class order as per the schedule, so open class last. Afraid it may be an early-ish start for you! ;)

That's nice of you guys to think we could do 2'6 but I really think we'd struggle and I want to try and keep it nice and easy for him just now so that he builds his confidence (plus I'm a wuss!)

FJ - I've never been pulled up for the bandages before - I don't boot him because his feather get in the way and the bandages seem to have better staying power. I'm probably not even going to bother with either for the D&D event!

We're in class 4 so hopefully not too early!

I am a firm believer in being more than confident at one level before stepping up, so sounds like a good plan and it's best to keep it fun. :)

Understand what you're saying about the bandages suiting his feathers better than boots, I'm sure if you add a strip of boot/electric tape round them all will be fine at Dalkeith if you want to use them there. It's just for XC there is more risk of them getting damp/snagged on something and unravelling, so the tape should prevent this. :)

PS- meant to add, I'm amazed you slipped past the tack check at Doune XC- last year they did top to toe tack inspection (made me feel like a 9 year old!) and made me take my excess stirrup leather out of keeper so it was flapping around instead?! Apparently that would help my stirrup release in case of a fall?! Good old PC events, got to love them. ;) So they weren't just picking on you if it makes you feel better, they can usually find something with every horse/rider to tut or ask to change. ;)

Doune picked me up on my stirrup width - they weren't happy with the gap between my boot and the edge of the stirrup iron but let me run anyway - I've since bought bigger stirrup but not once in my many, many falls have my feet got stuck in the stirrups! I've had so much practice that I've now perfected the art of falling of and landing on my feet!

you did so well hun:D just loko how far you guys have come! i remember a time you fell off going over xpoles and casper climbed everything!!:D I had a wee lump in my throat seeing him storming into the finish:D:o

I personally dont think craigie 2ft6 is underheight hun, ive actually always found it's one of the more up to height ones;) Having seen you popping the middle warmup fence I cant see you having a problem:) I have gleneagles course pics somewhere... will root them out.

Ps where are the pics? I tried very hard to make like MrFigJam, lol

I only walked part of the 2'6 course but there wasn't one jump I wasn't happy with although the scary ones were probably the ones I missed lol!

Will post piccies later - I can't load them to face book til until I get home!

Plan for next year is to do Halliburton, Montrave and Craigie in the spring and then regularly compete 2'6 for the rest of the season.

sounds a really good plan, that way you'l be more than ready for it :)

Well done!!

Sounds like a good day out and well done for getting him to jump after the stops.

sounds like a bit of a nightmare with the pile up and the junior haring past - although sounds like it helped you through the water so maybe not so annoying after all!

Would be interested in seeing pics :)

Here are some pics that NSN took of us in the warm up!

Yes we're going - have decided to bite the bullet and do the 2'6 class as it looks from last years pictures to be under height and the 2' class is apparently tiny!

Good luck at Titlington!! I'm sure you'll do brilliantly!
