After reading Thursday's issue of Horse and Hound I were upset to read of a local stud owner been prosecuted for neglect of her Caspian ponies.
Its worrying to think that only a short distance away, almost under every locals nose, ponies are in a distressed / neglected state and according to the H&H report, dead.
Surly this didn't happen over night, when is it a "reportable"?? I feel guilty that as a local myself I didn't see it, but more so others visiting the place and the owner herself didn't seem to notice either.
Just hope the ponies that were involved are in good homes now.

My understanding is that there had been an awareness of the situation for some time, but there had been difficulties in getting the evidence to court. I am also aware that as late as July of this year, there were ponies kept on land full of ragwort and that she did attempt to sell a number through York sales, but ended up taking the majority of them home. I know someone who offered to buy at least one of the mares, having seen them at the sales, only to be told that the price was over a thousand pounds! I have wondered how people in the area were unaware of the situation.

I don't like any form of animal cruelty.Just to make that clear. However SOME people who are convicted of animal cruelty just don't mean to be cruel. Some definately have some mental health issues.By all means rescue the animals and a ban hopefully means that that person will not be in a position to start again but some compassion is also needed I think.

I can assure you people have not turned a blind eye, it's been going on for years and I've no idea how it's taken so long. The RSPCA have been dealing with her for so long. Going to have to read the article. She came on her a few years back saying something about her prize stallion been gelded. She soon went when I let people know what she is really like.

Hopefully the RSPCA deal with all her dogs too. Also she in royston barnsley not Wakefield.

With regard to the mental state of the woman involved, I have no direct knowledge of her having any form of diagnosis of a mental illness, but would have hoped that anyone with the length of experience I am led to believe she has, would know that ragwort is poisonous and that it is not a good idea to ask the neighbours to donate their lawn clippings to feed the ponies on! Unless someone is suggesting that she has a dementing illness, I cannot see that her own mental state is any form of excuse for the prolonged behaviour.

No she had no mental issues.
That was my understanding, but I know someone further up the thread was suggesting that this woman was worthy of pity, because of her health. Having spoken to other people in the area, this woman has been creating this problem for years!
